New to the LexisNexis services? From cases to codes, law review articles to news materials, the LexisNexis research system has the resources you need to complete your research assignments. We are confident you will find the LexisNexis research system to be an invaluable research resource throughout your law school career and beyond.

How do I access the LexisNexis services?
Your LexisNexis account representative, law school librarian, or other faculty member will give you a one-time activation code that will allow you to create your own LexisNexis Custom ID and password. You will use this Custom ID and password throughout your time in law school.

Once you've created your LexisNexis Custom ID and Password, simply go to http://www.lexisnexis.com/lawschool/ and enter your Custom ID and Password in the sign on box. Then, to get to the research system, simply click on the Research System tab or the red "Sign On to the Total Research System" button.

What is an activation code?
An activation code contains 7 letters and/or numbers. You'll use it to create your own LexisNexis Custom ID and Password that you'll use to access online research.

How do I use my activation code to create my Custom ID and Password?
Simply follow the short registration process to create your Custom ID and Password and establish your LexisNexis account.

Once I have created my Custom ID and Password, will I need to keep my activation code?
Although you will not need your activation code to access the LexisNexis services, if you should forget your Custom ID we will be able to assist you more quickly if you keep your activation code.

What if I forget my Custom ID or Password?
You can quickly retrieve your Password by accessing our Forgot Your Password function and answering a few simple questions.

If you forget your Custom ID, a variety of resources are available to assist you. If you still have your 7-character activation code, access the registration system to view your Custom ID. You can also contact your LexisNexis Account Representative, call our 24/7 Customer Support at 1-800-45-LEXIS, or access our Live Research Help service to chat online with a Customer Support representative.

Custom ID and Password Guidelines

How do I use my 7-digit ID to create my Custom ID and Password?
Simply follow the short registration process to create your Custom ID and Password.

Does my 7-digit ID contain a lowercase l or the letter O?
Please note that your 7-digit ID does not contain the letters L or O, in capitals or lowercase. You will want to use the numbers 1 and 0 instead.

Are there any special guidelines I should keep in mind when selecting my Custom ID and Password?

• The Custom ID must consist of 8-25 characters and the Password must consist of 8-50 characters.
• The Custom ID and Password must each contain at least one letter (a,b,c, etc.). Additionally, the Password must contain at least one number (1,2,3, etc.). 
• Only these four special characters @ (at sign), _ (underscore), . (period), or – (hyphen) are permitted; do not use spaces.
• The Custom ID and Password must be unique from each other, other LexisNexis services’ custom IDs, and other LexisNexis-assigned IDs.
• Do not use LexisNexis product names (Lexis, Nexis, etc.).
• Do not use common words (words found in a dictionary) or offensive language.
• Your first name, last name, or first-and-last names cannot be used alone as a Custom ID or Password. Any combination of your name(s) and other characters that meets other Custom ID and Password requirements is acceptable. Examples:
  – Unacceptable: John, Public, JohnPublic
  – Acceptable: JohnQPublic, JQPublic

I'd like to change my Custom ID. Can I do that?
Yes. You can modify your Custom ID by accessing the Manage Your ID function. You can also change your Password, edit your email address, and manage other account settings from this Custom ID management screen.
