The Obama administration announces it will spend up to $100 million to purchase development rights from Central FLORIDA ranchers and farmers as a means to aid the restoration of over 24,000 acres in the Northern Everglades. The purchase would prevent the land from being paved over and ensure restoration of wetlands and slow the flow of nutrient pollution now pouring into Lake Okeechobee. It marks the largest single conservation purchase in the history of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (ST. PETERSBURG TIMES). • ILLINOIS Gov. Pat Quinn (D) signs SB 2106, which expands the items under Prairie State e-waste law that must be recycled to include computer keyboards, portable music devices, scanners, videocassette recorders and video game consoles among other items. The law also requires the state's manufacturers to increase their e-waste recycling to reach 40 percent of the products they sold in 2010 (ILLINOIS GOVERNOR'S OFFICE).
