Reed Elsevier Participates In 2012 World Environment Day

Mark Armour, Chief Financial Officer, Reed Elsevier Group plc, is delighted to herald United Nations World Environment Day which will take place on Tuesday, 5 June - the most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. The 2012 World Environment Day focus is 'Green Economy: does it include you?' which celebrates more sustainable ways of doing business.

Each year Mark hosts an Environmental Checkpoint Meeting with Reed Elsevier's Environmental Champions to review progress in decreasing the company's environmental impact and to identify opportunities for environmental and financial savings. As part of our efforts this year, Reed Elsevier is focusing on waste streams, identifying ways to divert waste from landfill to advance its 2020 target of zero waste to landfill at key locations. Reed Elsevier is also striving to purchase 30 per cent of electricity from renewable sources by the end of the year, a step in our longer-term goal of obtaining 100 per cent of its electricity from renewables or offsets by 2020.

Another key strand in improving Reed Elsevier's environmental performance is the Reed Elsevier Environmental Standards. Mark is pleased to announce that 69 of their business locations have been designated as green this year, up from 40 in the previous year. To achieve green status, locations have to achieve five of the eight standards covering key environmental impact areas including paper consumption, waste, water, energy, carbon, travel, reporting and certification.

Through our products and services, Reed Elsevier continues to inform environmental debate and aid decision makers. They also engage on environmental issues in concert with partners like environmental charity Earthwatch. In 2012, they are offering employees the opportunity to join an Earthwatch field expedition at reduced rates.

Doing more for the environment requires involvement across all Reed Elsevier businesses. Mark congratulates Reed Elsevier's 2012 Green Heroes, who werenominated by colleagues for their environmental efforts over the last year.
