State Net Capitol Journal: Malloy Gets Okay to Cut Medicaid

Leaders of key panels in the Connecticut Senate said they will not interfere with Gov. Dannell P. Malloy's (D) effort to cut 13,000 people from the state's Medicaid rolls. Leaders in the Appropriations and Human Services Committees said they will not meet again before August 18, the deadline to block Malloy's application for federal approval to tighten eligibility in the Medicaid for Low-Income Adults program.

Sen. Toni Harp (D), who co-chairs the Appropriations Committee, said lawmakers were resigned to making the cuts, which are expected to save the state $50 million this fiscal year. Lawmakers assumed those savings when they adopted the state budget last May.

"There are certainly some that are unhappy that some people will be dropped [from coverage]," Harp said. "But we really needed to find the [budget] savings." (CONNECTICUT MIRROR)
