Failure to develop a gender identity that is congruent with biological gender is a dysfunction. How severe it has to be to make a diagnosis and how and if you should treat it, are separate issues. Of which is for clinicians and psychologist to decide. I oppose any law that enables and encourages gender identity disorder, unless it somehow involves the set up of a break-through state funded treatment program that will help these people from the inside-out, so they become more comfortable with their self-evident biological gender. Encouraging them to do otherwise, is both medically and psychologically unhealthy regardless of any discrimination or perceived discrimination... Studies show that suicide ideation actually increases after sex reassignment surgery. See this extensive one conducted in Sweden, which is considered one of the most pro-homosexuality friendly locations in the world... Here's a testimonial from a former transgender Walt Heyer... Another former transgender testimony... There's another side - the truth - that needs to be heard. It's about what this unfortunate and tragic disorder is really about, and how it harms the people engaging in it and the people around them, especially children.... Researchers, Zucker and Bradley, also maintain that when parents or others allow or encourage a child to behave and be treated as the opposite sex, the confusion is reinforced and the child is conditioned for a life of unnecessary pain and suffering. Even when motivated by noble intentions, schools can ironically play a detrimental role if they reinforce this disorder... Research shows that the risk of suicide decreases by 20% for each year that a person delays homosexual or bisexual self-labeling. Suicide attempts were not explained by experiences with discrimination, violence, loss of friendship, or current personal attitudes towards homosexuality.
