Texas Reporter Awarded Journalism Medal

"The 2011 Casey Medal judges credited Melissa del Bosque for her unusual "initiative, determination and bravery" in reporting "Children of the Exodus." She describes what it was like to dedicate herself to reporting this important story, which explored what happened to unaccompanied minors deported to Mexico by the U.S. government.  ... Said del Bosque: 'Until the U.S. and Mexican governments address the poverty that pushes immigrants to make the perilous journey across the border, these children won't stop trying to reunite with their parents or looking for work in the United States. Even if the U.S. government puts soldiers on the border and spends billions on fences and high-tech equipment, they're not going to stop the exodus.  Not until there's something to hope for at home.'
