Amnesty International on UN Human Rights Council’s Review of US Human Rights Record

Human Rights Now, Amnesty International's blog, yesterday described its involvement in the Universal Periodic Review of the United States conducted by the UN Human Rights Council.  Although non-governmental organizations such as AI are not allowed to speak during the review, they are encouraged to file written reports outlining their concerns with a reviewee's human rights record. Prominently figured in AI's report was a recommendation of a U.S. moratorium on the death penalty as a step towards ultimate abolition. Additional recommendations addressed the closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention facility, police brutality, and migrant rights.

According to Human Rights Now, the results of the U.S.'s Universal Periodic Review was scheduled to be released yesterday.  Formal adoption by the UN Human Rights Council will take place in the spring of 2011.
