Making History: Celebrating 100 Years of Workers’ Compensation

Making History: Celebrating 100 Years of Workers’ Compensation

Workers’ compensation was the first social reform in America. It was borne out of human suffering and pain and transformed into a beacon of hope and cooperation. The “Great Compromise” was built not only on the backs of American workers and their families, but by the forethought of progressive business leaders and employers. It continues to stand as a cornerstone of the American economy today and a necessity for all American workers.

In 1911, eleven states enacted workers’ compensation laws. A committee comprised of representatives of the Massachusetts Department of Industrial Accidents, the Massachusetts Bar Association, the Workers’ Injury Law & Advocacy Group, and the Massachusetts Academy of Trial Attorneys is planning a series of events to commemorate the centennial. Various other groups including Injured Workers Pharmacy, insurers and labor groups are also collaborating to mark this occasion and organizations such as the American Bar Association’s Workers’ Compensation sections, and the College of Workers’ Compensation Lawyers, among others, are planning to come to Boston for this commemoration.
