Putting E-Discovery on the LexisNexis® Early Data Analyzer Diet
We’ve all heard of fast, fad, crash diets. There’s the lemonade diet, the cabbage soup diet, the Hollywood diet, etc. Well, you can apply those to people, but can you apply them to a massively overweight document collection? Not likely, unless you don’t have another option.
In six days, we went from 1TB to a 74GB production with the help of LexisNexis Early Data Analyzer. Still a lot of data, but we were feeling the weight on our shoulders (and our document collection) coming off.
The Challenge: Heavy document collection. Light on production time.
It was Thursday afternoon and we got the call from the partner. Wade: “I’ve got some documents coming in that we need to produce.”
If you haven’t heard that statement before, you haven’t been in litigation support as long as Wade Peterson and Nforsi Moutchia have been. Wade is the director of Practice Support at Bowman and Brooke LLP; and Nforsi is a case manager. Together their experience in law firm technology and litigation support spans well over two decades. The rest of their conversation, went a little like this:
“How many custodians?” “Forty custodians.”
“What format is it in?” “Native files.”
“When do we get the data?” “Friday.”
“What’s the production output?” “TIFF images.”
“When is it due?” “Next Wednesday.” (6 days)
“How much data is there?” “1 terabyte.” (gulp!)
To the partner that was small potatoes. To Wade and Nforsi, that was the entire gross yearly output of Idaho farmers. A terabyte of data to process, extract metadata, extract text, review, and produce to TIF images. In six days.
Let me explain. The collection turned out to be 4,867,078 documents. We had six days. We use LexisNexis® LAW PreDiscovery™ to process ESI. But even loading a terabyte of data into LAW PreDiscovery (as fast as it is) wasn’t going to be possible if we were to meet the six day deadline. We needed something else.
The Solution: LexisNexis® Early Data Analyzer makes light work of overweight data set
Luckily, we’d been testing the newest product from LexisNexis for early case assessment. LexisNexis Early Data Analyzer is a new tool to quickly ingest a large amount of data, analyze the content, perform full-text and keyword searches, do file type culling, de-NISTing, domain name culling, etc. We were part of the beta testing program, and had recently received the latest build, which was just prior to final release to manufacturing. We were apprehensive, but our testing of Early Data Analyzer was going very well and the product was solid.
“Let’s try the Early Data Analyzer diet” I told Nforsi. He agreed. Working with the legal team, he devised a set of keyword search terms, culled out the NIST files, duplicates, and miscellaneous non-responsive file types. LexisNexis Early Data Analyzer made light work of ingesting the terabyte of data.
Without LexisNexis Early Data Analyzer, we would not have made the production deadline. This single project alone justified our decision to order Early Data Analyzer; which we plan to use routinely on all ESI coming into the firm.
Data was received on Friday afternoon. We had it loaded into LexisNexis Early Data Analyzer by Saturday afternoon. Using the capabilities of Early Data Analyzer, we were able to work with the legal team, reveal information about the collection quickly, and slim it down to a manageable 88,663 documents (74GB) for production output. In six days, we went from 1TB to a 74GB production with the help of LexisNexis Early Data Analyzer. Still a lot of data, but we were feeling the weight on our shoulders (and our document collection) coming off. LexisNexis Early Data Analyzer can export directly into LAW PreDiscovery, so we were able to expedite that step in the workflow. At that point, LAW PreDiscovery took over, along with several very dedicated team members.
The Conclusion: Slimmed down, trimmed down production in deadline-beating time
Without LexisNexis Early Data Analyzer, we would not have made the production deadline. This single project alone justified our decision to order Early Data Analyzer; which we plan to use routinely on all ESI coming into the firm. Getting an early look at the data, reviewing it quickly with the legal team, cutting out the fat, trimming it down to a slimmer size is what early case assessment is all about. There is a famous quote that says “We don’t even know what we don’t know.” With Early Data Analyzer, we know.
