Jeff Atkinson has more than 27 years of experience in family law. He is the author of the two-volume treatise, Modern Child Custody Practice, LexisNexis, The American Bar Association Guide to Family Now, now in its fifth edition, and more than 50 articles on legal and public policy issues. His writings on legal issues have been cited by the United States Supreme Court and eleven state supreme courts.
A professor of law for 22 years, Atkinson currently teaches at DePaul University College of Law in Chicago, Ill., and serves as a professor-reporter for the Illinois Judicial Conference, responsible for training Illinois judges in family law and legal ethics. Prior to teaching at DePaul, he taught at Loyola University School of Law, also in Chicago (1982-1991). He has taught courses in family law, health care law, mental health law and ethics.
Atkinson has worked on several legislative drafting projects at the state and national levels, including serving as an ABA advisor to the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws and a member of a legislative committee of the state of Texas to reform part of its Family Law Code. In addition, the U.S. State Department appointed him to serve as a U.S. Delegate to the Hague Conference on Private International Law for development of treaties pertaining to health care and family law.

Atkinson is an active member of the American Bar Association. He is a current member and past chair of the Association's Child Custody Committee, as well as former chair of its Family Law Section Governing Council, Long Range Planning Committee and editorial board of several of its publications. He has also served as the chair of the Standing Committee on Mental Health Law for the Illinois State Bar Association.
