More on EnvironmentSusan Cooke is a leading environmental law expert and editor-in-chief and principal author of Matthew Bender's The Law of Hazardous Waste: Management, Cleanup, Liability and Litigation. She is also co-editor and contributing author of two editions of the Massachusetts Environmental Law Handbook, as well as the author of a number of legislative and regulatory proposals that have now been adopted. She is a partner in the law firm of McDermott, Will & Emery, LLP, where she heads the environmental practice. She also counsels industrial and commercial companies on a wide range of environmental compliance issues.
Cooke has worked on environmental, health and safety requirements in countries around the world. She has represented clients before agencies and authorities on a variety of permitting and enforcement issues, including contaminated sites cleanup liability and redevelopment of brownfield sites. She obtained the first waiver under state chemical regulation law to expedite construction of an industrial facility, and the first exemption in the country from the Federal Toxic Substances Control Act's premanufacture notification requirements. She is also one of the originators of environmental opinions now used in many large corporate and real estate transactions throughout the country.
Prior to entering law firm practice, she served as an enforcement attorney in the New England Regional Office of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and a patent attorney in the private sector. She is listed in Who's Who in America, Best Lawyers in America, International Who's Who of Environment Lawyers and Massachusetts Super Lawyers.
