An expert in workers' compensation, Steven Birnbaum is an advisor for the Benefits Review Board Report published by LexisNexis and served as the editor of Longshore Textbook, published by the Lawyers & Judges Publishing Company in 1997. Birnbaum is certified by the State Bar of California as a specialist in workers' compensation.

Prior to starting his own practice in 1983, Birnbaum was a staff attorney for Legal Assistance to the Elderly and a clinical advisor at New College School of Law, both located in San Francisco. His current work targets workers' compensation under the Longshore and Harbor Workers' Act, and also the California Labor Code.
