Quick Tip #2: Use My Workspace carousel to select and manage tasks
Conducting multiple tasks is vital to the work you do. Lexis Advance™ My Workspace helps you access, organize and manage your research-all from a visual carousel. Store your research, search history, recent and favorite search filters, work folders and alerts, and get access to customer support. Read more about My Workspace.
Quick Tip #3: Search once-get updates automatically (LexisNexis® Alerts)
First review the results of your news, cases or legislative search. Then request alert updates—no new search needed, the alert will notify you of any changes that maybe important to your matter . To create an alert, click the Options link then Create an alert. You choose when you want updates—daily, weekly or monthly. Get updates online or sent to your email.
Manage your alerts—edit, delete or check for updates—via the Yellow alerts panel in Lexis Advance My Workspace.
Follow changes to Shepard’s® reports too! Click the Create an alert link at the top of your Shepard’s report.
With Alerts you will have the confidence you have left no stone unturned.
Quick Tip #4: Control costs … Preview documents before buying out of subscription
You told us you need to understand costs up front to make informed decisions and control expenses.
With Lexis Advance™, you know immediately if any document in your search results is outside your subscription. The red Out of Plan notification shows you.
Click and see the purchase cost—as well as a Free Preview summary so you can determine the document's relevance.
You can also save the document to a work folder—and purchase it later.
Quick Tip #5: Shepard’s® Graphical shows you citing references in an easy-to-find, visual format
- Click the Citing Decisions tab on your Shepard’s® results screen. You have two viewing and filtering options. The default List view offers a cite list and left navigation pane. Filter by treatment, court, year, LexisNexis® headnote and/or date.
- Click Grid and see your case’s citing history summarized in visuals.
- Select a box on the grid to filter, e.g., 2nd Circuit cases that questioned your case. You’ll move to the List view with your selections displayed. Filter further, e.g., by headnote, if you choose.
Quick Tip #6: Compile cases supporting any legal issue
Pinpoint a relevant legal issue in your full-text case, and the exclusive Lexis Advance™ Legal Issue Trail™ feature connects you to:
- more cases that cite to your case for that legal issue; and/or
- supporting cases your case cited on that issue.
Even retrieve cases outside your original search results.
To activate the Legal Issue Trail in your full-text case: Click Activate Passages in the right navigation pane of the full-text case display. Then click the highlighted passage for your legal issue.
You retrieve a list of supporting cases in a new Lexis Advance tab.
A. Click a case name—and move directly to the first full-text passage citing your case!
B. Cases are listed in order by relevance. Also sort by date, court, etc.
C. To go back to your case, click its tab. Your case list remains until you close the red passages tab.

See the bigger picture by reviewing your research history for the past 90 days. By reviewing the searches and documents in your Lexis Advance™ Research Map, you can identify the paths you’ve explored already—and determine where to explore next to find relevant documents.
Your graphical Lexis Advance Research Map lets you:
- Compare search results to pinpoint all the similar documents retrieved
- Use the Find Similar Documents feature to identify the commonalities and to find more relevant documents
- Sort activity by date(s) or clients
Use Research Map as a starting point, tapping effective searches and documents.
