2009 Redwood Events

An article published in The Lawyer on Monday, December 8, regarding client retention and attrition (“Hunt for client retention strategy is on as attrition rate hits 12 percent a year”) contained several factual mistakes and mischaracterizations of a recent Redwood Think Tank study that we wish to correct.

For instance, the opening sentence of the article says that “law firms could be losing an average of 12 percent of their clients annually.” There is nothing in the study to support this conclusion. The data actually revealed that, on average, firms who participated in the study experienced a decline of 1 percent in billable hours from existing clients – not a decline in clients.

The article also states that the study involved data collected from a group of eight law firms. This is simply not the case. In reality, the study results are based on data gathered from a much larger group of more than 30 law firms of varying sizes in the U.S. and U.K.

In addition, while the article correctly highlights SJ Berwin’s success in maintaining extremely low attrition rates, it inaccurately suggests that Bryan Cave experienced high attrition levels during the period covered by the study. In fact, the study data showed that both firms significantly outperformed a majority of their peers in the area of retention of hours from existing clients during the periods studied.
