An audit of screenings completed between 2002 and 2007 found that from the more than 3.7 million background screenings completed during this five year period, over 189,000 individuals with at least one criminal conviction attempted to gain employment or volunteer with a nonprofit organization.
Who's Lending a Hand?
In 2007, the National Center for Victims of Crime conducted a nationwide study of the background screening practices of nonprofits across the country. The vast majority of organizations that participated in the survey indicated that they conduct some form of screening on incoming volunteers, but not all organizations that screen do so thoroughly.
The study offers recommendations and best practices nonprofit should adopt to more thoroughly protect the populations they serve.
