This combination provides students with the foundation for becoming skilled trial advocates within the boundaries of the rules of evidence.

    Trial Technique and Evidence explains the purpose and application of each evidence rule. The practical methods of presenting evidence are balanced against the requirements of the rules. Indeed, many evidence rules are "practice" rules, either not covered in the formal rules of evidence or not addressed in detail. The basis for introducing demonstrative exhibits, for example, is not included in the federal rules, and impeaching witnesses in trial requires knowledge of practical technique. Trial Technique and Evidence allows a professor to incorporate practical requirements with evidence theory. The text also includes practical steps for compliance with the rules, with examples to facilitate the student's understanding, and addresses recent developments such as:

    Michael R. Fontham


    Michael R. Fontham engages in a civil litigation practice as a partner in the New Orleans law firm of Stone Pigman Walther Wittmann L.L.C. His practice involves commercial disputes before state and federal courts and regulatory agencies, and includes contract disputes, utility rate matters, public interest cases and varied commercial cases. Fontham is a graduate of the University of Virginia Law School. He teaches evidence as an adjunct professor at the Tulane University Law School and at the LSU Law Center. He has been an instructor in the National Institute of Trial Advocacy (NITA) at the University of Virginia since 1983. He lectures frequently on trial advocacy, appellate advocacy and evidence, has taught advocacy skills courses at the Law School at Loyola University, and has taught in the Louisiana Judicial College. Fontham is the author of Trial Technique and Evidence (Third Edition, 2008), a text on trial advocacy and evidence. He also authored Persuasive Written and Oral Advocacy: In Trial and Appellate Courts (2002) (with Michael Vitiello and David W. Miller), a treatise on brief writing, oral argument and appellate practice that expands and updates his Written and Oral Advocacy (1985). He has authored and delivered lectures on trial and appellate advocacy, evidence, utility regulation, and other issues.
