    This casebook offers both theoretical and practical treatment of criminal law, which helps students to understand the underlying principles and to relate them to real-life situations. Criminal Law introduces students to the criminal justice system, raises the question of why and how we punish, and provides a framework for classroom discussion of the relationship between the state and the individual.     Unlike many other casebooks that merely cite the Model Penal Code, Criminal Law discusses various state statutes, helping students to understand how similar crimes are treated in different jurisdictions. In addition, this book does contain numerous references throughout to the Model Penal Code and the various other proposed codes. The extent of editing of cases varies according to the principles being highlighted. Some cases that focus entirely on a particular issue are reproduced in full, while other cases are heavily edited to emphasize the key questions raised. This highly focused approach makes the cases, and the principles they illustrate, easier for students to comprehend

    Paul Marcus is the Haynes Professor of Law at the Marshall-Wythe School of Law, and the author of Prosecution and Defense of Criminal Conspiracy Cases (Matthew Bender). Professor Marcus is widely regarded as the leading authority on conspiracy law in the United States. He has lectured throughout the U.S. to judges, prosecutors, defense lawyers, and law students, and has given talks on conspiracy-related issues in foreign countries as well. Professor Marcus has been quoted frequently in the popular media on criminal justice issues (the New York Times, the L.A. Times, the Wall Street Journal, 60 Minutes, ABC News, Newsweek, Time.) Criminal Conspiracy Cases has been cited with approval by federal appeals judges in the First, Fifth, Seventh, Ninth and DC Circuits, as well as by many federal district courts and state courts. Features include: reproduction of every federal and state conspiracy statute, updated annually; practical discussion of complications arising in multi-defendant trials, such as joinder and severance of defendants and the hearsay exception for co-conspirator declarations; and thorough analysis of the relationship between conspiracy law and other legal issues, including RICO, aiding and abetting liability and sentencing.

    Professor Cook is the senior member of the University of Tennessee faculty, joining the faculty in 1965 shortly after receiving his LL.M. degree from Yale University. He was named Williford Gragg Professor in 1979 and served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs during 1991¿92. Professor Cook is the author or co-author of several texts and casebooks, including Civil Rights Actions and Constitutional Rights of the Accused, and has been widely published in the areas of criminal search and seizure, probable cause, arrest, and detention. He has received the Carden Award for Outstanding Scholarship, the Harold C. Warner Outstanding Teacher Award (twice), the Forrest W. Lacey Award (twice), and the Alumni Outstanding Teacher Award. Professor Cook is a Trustee of the Tennessee Justice Foundation.
