    Steven W. Ford


    Steven W. Ford is a practicing attorney in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and a member of the Alabama State Bar. He is a graduate of the University of Alabama and the University of Alabama School of Law. For several years he served as an adjunct professor at the University of Alabama School of Law, teaching workers' compensation law. He was a co-founder and first chairperson of the Alabama State Bar Workers' Compensation Law Section. From 1991񮖘 he served as a representative of the Alabama State Bar in negotiations and sessions of the state legislature with regard to workers' compensation reform. Mr. Ford is also a member of the Legal Advisory Committee to the Department of Industrial Relations and is a frequent lecturer and author of articles on Alabama workers' compensation law. He has been listed from 1995 to present in the The Best Lawyers in America in the area of workers' compensation law. Mr. Ford is a member of the Executive Committee of the Alabama Trial Lawyers Association and serves on the editorial board of the Alabama Trial Lawyer Journal. He is a mediator certified by the United States Arbitration Mediation of the South, Inc. and a recipient of the State Bar Award of Achievement as well as the Alabama State Bar Award of Merit.

    James A. Abernathy, II



    Jim Abernathy lives in Tuscaloosa, Alabama with his wife and two children. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, in Philosophy and Political Science in 1993, and a Juris Doctorate in 1996, both from the University of Alabama. Since admission to the practice of law, Mr. Abernathy has practiced almost exclusively on behalf of claimants in Social Security disability, workers' compensation, and disability insurance matters. For the first six years of his practice, he was an associate with the firm of McElvy & Ford, P.C. In 2002, Douglas McElvoy left the firm and Mr. Abernathy became a shareholder. The firm was then renamed Ford, Martin & Abernathy, P.C. Mr. Abernathy has written articles on workers' compensation and Social Security for the Alabama Lawyer and the Alabama Trial Lawyers Journal. He lectures widely on the interplay of workers' compensation and Social Security disability. Beginning in the Spring 2005, he will serve as an adjunct professor at the University of Alabama School of Law, teaching workers' compensation.

    Wendy Thornton



    Wendy Thornton was born in Ruston, Louisiana on June 14, 1970. She is a shareholder in Lee & Thornton, P.C. She is a graduate of the University of Alabama (BA Public Relations, 1992) and Cumberland School of Law, Samford University (JD, 1996). Since admission to the Alabama State Bar in 1996, she has practiced in workers' compensation, labor and employment, and civil litigation. Ms. Thornton is an officer of the Workers' Compensation Section of the Alabama State Bar and a member of the following associations: Alabama State Bar, Birmingham Bar Association, Birmingham Inns of Court, and Alabama Trial Lawyers Association. She is an editor for the Benefits Bugle, publication of the Workers' Compensation Section of the Alabama State Bar and has written articles for the Alabama Trial Lawyers Journal (Alabama Workers' Compensation Act v. Utilization Review, Volume 22, No. 2), the Attorneys Insurance Mutual Newsletter (Traps and Pittfalls in Representing the Injured Employee, Fall 1999) and the Benefits Bugle (Effects of Alabama Code § 25LJᇍ(a)(3)(i) , Summer 2000). She has lectured extensively for various organizations including: Continuing Legal Education Speaker, Alabama State Bar, Attorneys Insurance Mutual and Alabama Governor's Safety & Health Conference.
