    The Supreme Court decisions in Missouri v. Frye and Lafler v. Cooper have important immigration-related implications for noncitizens and even U.S. citizens. Maurice Hew, Jr., of Thurgood Marshall School of Law, explains how the new field of "plea-bargaining" law adds considerations for criminal defense attorneys to absorb and apply. He also shows an example of how to do just that.

     

    Maurice Hew, Jr., is an Associate Professor at Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston, Texas, where he directs the administrative (immigration) law clinic; contributes substantial time representing lower-income individuals pro bono; and teaches immigration-related doctrinal courses, trial simulation, and professional responsibility. Under his direction, the Thurgood Marshall Clinical Legal Studies Program was the 2010 recipient of the Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc., pro bono award for appellate immigration litigation in cooperation with the Board of Immigration Appeals’ Pro Bono Project.

     

    Professor Hew received his law degree from Loyola University School of Law in New Orleans. He is licensed in Texas and Louisiana. He is admitted to several federal courts, including the United States Supreme Court, and is Board Certified in Immigration and Nationality Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Professor Hew is currently serving on the Texas Board of Legal Specialization Committee on Immigration and Nationality Law and is a frequent speaker and writer on immigration and nationality issues.

     

    Professor Hew’s current research relates to the attorney performance standards following the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in Padilla v. Kentucky, which includes immigration advice within the Sixth Amendment.
