Selecting Sources

This tutorial module explains how to select a source for your search with LexisNexis® NZ research services.

LexisNexis NZ offers several ways for you to select a source for your search. All are easy to use, but you may find that one particular method fits your research style best.

Selecting a Specific Source.

On the Home Page, you can choose from a list of commonly used sources in the "General Search Sources" section at the bottom of the page. This list can be customised. The sources are listed in categories, such as Cases or Commentary, so it is easy to find the one you need. To search a source, just select the Search link next to the source name. If a Browse link is listed next to the source name, select it to browse the source's table of contents. The source you select appears on the appropriate search form, where you can enter your search terms and run the search.

On many Search forms, you can also use the Sources drop-down menu to select a specific source.

Using the Source Directory.

If you do not find the source you need through the Quick Sources Section or Sources drop-down menu, use the Source Directory. You can display the Source Directory by selecting the More Sources link on a Search form, or by selecting the Source Directory tab at the top of your screen.

There are two ways to use the Source Directory. Use the Browse Sources tab to explore the entire list of subscribed sources, or use the Find Sources tab to search for a specific subscribed source.

Use the Browse Sources tab when you are not sure what source you need. They list categories of sources that you select to find the appropriate source. The source categories include all your subscribed sources, but you can restrict the display by publication or area of law. You can also view just those sources related to a particular country or content type. Selecting a category name displays a list of individual sources. To choose a source for your search, select the source name. To select multiple sources to search, use the tick boxes to the left of the source names. To retrieve the table of contents for a source (where the browse option is available), select the Browse link.

The number of sources you select appears at the top of the page. As you choose sources, they appear in the Selected Sources list for your reference. You can use the list to easily remove one or more sources from your search. To remove an individual source, click the Remove link associated with the source name. Or click the Remove All link at the bottom of the list to remove all the sources from your search. When you've selected your sources, select the OK-Continue button to return to the Search form. The selected sources will appear on the form.

Use the Find Sources tab when you know part of a source name, or want to check if a specific source is available. You can find a source by alphabet or by keyword search by selecting the appropriate option on the Find Sources tab.

To find a source by alphabet, click on the appropriate link to list sources that begin with that numeric range or letter. To choose a source for your search, select the source name. As on the Browse Sources tab, when you've chosen all your sources, select the OK-Continue button to return to the Search form. The sources will appear on the form.

The Find Sources Keyword search feature is useful when you only know part of the source name. In the text box on the Find Sources page, enter one or more words from the name of the source you want to find. Then select the Find Sources button. The Find Sources feature retrieves a list of sources matching your search terms. To choose a source for your search, select the source name. To view the table of contents of the source, select the source's browse link.
