Types of Firms Practicing Intellectual Property Law

Small Law Perspective: Sophisticated intellectual property practices are often found in small boutique law firms that specialize in a single practice area. Firms in this category will often take on matters that are more typically seen in a large law firm and will produce average revenues per attorney that rival those seen in large law.

Large Law Perspective: Virtually every large or national law firm will have an intellectual property department focusing on copyright, trademarks and patents, along with associated issues in trade secrets and entertainment/media law. These firms may also be engaged in intellectual property litigation.

Corporate Counsel: Corporate legal departments will handle most routine aspects of intellectual property in managing and protecting the company’s intellectual property assets and often will outsource only the most complex matters as well as intellectual property litigation.
