New Zealand Bar Association President
Paul David KC discusses the challenges for barristers in their work

Not so long ago, legal proceedings involved the exchange and filing of written pleadings followed by a largely oral process with a judge giving a decision at the end of the hearing. This now feels like ancient history, according to Paul David KC. Technology has transformed legal practice in Paul’s time in practice and it is now changing at much greater speed with the rapid development of computer learning systems.

But the aim of a barrister’s work remains the same – to advise and represent litigants before our courts so that justice is administered fairly and effectively. The tools available may now be different but the work to be done with them is the same.

Law Society warns of challenges to the rule of law despite global ranking

New Zealand ranks sixth globally for rule of law, but the Law Society is seeing cracks that suggest we shouldn't get too complacent

The New Zealand Law Society Te Kāhui Ture o Aotearoa (Law Society) has released “Strengthening the Rule of Law in Aotearoa New Zealand”, a comprehensive report highlighting key challenges to the rule of law. The report has produced 78 specific recommendations to address what Law Society President Frazer Barton describes as "systemic challenges to the rule of law.”
