Abu Dhabi: Special Licence Plates Launched for Self‑Driving Vehicles

Al Khaleej, 13 July 2026: The Integrated Transport Centre, under the supervision of the Autonomous Systems Council, has introduced dedicated licence plates for experimental and commercial self‑driving vehicles in Abu Dhabi.

The initiative marks the first time the emirate has issued specialised plates to regulate the operation of autonomous vehicles on its roads. The plates are designed to distinguish between vehicles used for testing and those providing commercial services.

Two main categories have been introduced: plates for commercial autonomous vehicles carry the phrase Auto Drive, while plates for test vehicles display the word Test. Both designs feature a unified blue background, making them easily identifiable on the road.

Officials explained that the plates will help authorities monitor autonomous vehicles, enhance road safety and ensure compliance with licensing and operational requirements. The system is linked to technical and regulatory standards, obliging operators to meet approved specifications.

The launch coincides with the expansion of autonomous vehicle services in Abu Dhabi, including pilot programmes and commercial operations by specialised companies. Authorities emphasised that the initiative supports data collection and analysis, enabling the development of policies and legislation to strengthen the regulatory framework as smart mobility expands.
