Oman: Labour Ministry Spotlights Sick and Special Leave Insurance

The Arabian Stories, 21 July 2026: Oman’s Ministry of Labour has underscored the importance of sick leave and special leave insurance in strengthening worker protection, supporting rights, and promoting workplace stability.

The insurance scheme, introduced under the social protection system, provides coverage for insured employees during periods of sick leave and legally approved special leaves, including marriage, bereavement, and accompanying a patient. The Ministry explained that the initiative ensures workers receive allowances during approved leave while safeguarding employment rights and reducing the impact of health or personal absences.

According to the General Federation of Oman Workers, the Sick Leave and Extraordinary Leave Insurance branch applies to Omani employees in private sector establishments covered by Oman Sultani Decree No. 53/2023 on the Promulgation of the Labour Law, including those on temporary and training contracts, as well as retired workers. Coverage also extends to expatriate workers employed in private sector establishments subject to Oman’s Labour Law.

The scheme benefits both employees and employers by compensating wages and contributions during leave periods, helping maintain contractual stability and fostering a sustainable work environment.
