Oman: Environment Authority Warns of Fines Up to RO 1,000 For Plastic Bag Violations

The Arabian Stories, 12 May 2026: The Environment Authority (EA) has reminded residents and businesses that violating the ban on plastic shopping bags can result in administrative fines ranging from RO 50 to RO 1,000, with penalties doubled for repeat offences.

In a public notification, the EA stressed the importance of complying with environmental regulations aimed at reducing plastic waste and protecting the environment. The authority emphasised that the ban applies to all commercial outlets and individuals, reinforcing Oman’s broader sustainability agenda.

Violators will face fines of not less than RO 50 and not more than RO 1,000, while repeated violations will trigger double penalties. The EA highlighted that enforcement measures are part of a national strategy to safeguard public health, preserve natural resources, and strengthen Oman’s environmental governance.
