Qatar: Shura Council Debates Child Digital Protection Proposal

The Peninsula, 18 May 2026: The Shura Council of Qatar debated a draft law on child digital protection, referring it for further committee review to strengthen safeguards for minors online.

During its session, the Council discussed a proposal submitted by members concerning the protection of children in the digital environment. HE the Speaker referred the draft to the Legal and Legislative Affairs Committee, which submitted its report to the Council. Following deliberation, the legislature unanimously approved forwarding the proposal to the Health, General Services and Environment Committee for further study and resubmission.

The proposal comes amid the rapid expansion of children’s use of digital platforms, raising challenges around data privacy, harmful content, cyberbullying, and digital exploitation. Legislators stressed the need to develop frameworks that strengthen child protection and keep pace with technological transformations.
