UAE: Federal Tax Authority Deploys AI-Driven Proactive Tax Model

Gulf News, 23 June 2026: The UAE Federal Tax Authority (FTA) has unveiled an advanced proactive model for tax administration, harnessing artificial intelligence to simplify procedures, reduce administrative requirements and accelerate services.

Director‑General Abdulaziz Mohammed Al Mulla confirmed that AI applications are now embedded across tax activities, including data analysis, risk assessment, request processing and automation. The initiative aligns with the UAE Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2031 and the government’s digital transformation agenda.

One of the most significant milestones is the VAT refund service for UAE nationals building new homes, delivered through the Maskan smart application. Refund requests are automatically generated once a building completion certificate or permit is issued, with citizens notified electronically. AI verifies refund amounts, checks suppliers’ tax registration numbers, and consolidates invoices into a single file, while banking details are integrated with the Central Bank for efficiency.

From launch until March 2026, refunds under this scheme reached Dh3.72 billion, reflecting rising awareness and uptake. The FTA has also expanded its digital VAT refund system for tourists, deploying self‑service kiosks at departure points, hotels and shopping centres. Average refund processing time has dropped to one minute and 10 seconds, with system readiness reaching 100 percent in Q1 2026.
