Abu Dhabi: New Fishing Rules Issued for 2026 Season

Gulf News, 27 April 2026: The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has begun implementing Ministerial Resolutions No. 74 and 75, updating fishing regulations to balance sustainability with food security, under directives of Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of EAD.

Resolution No. 74 cancels earlier restrictions on fishing and selling certain species during breeding seasons, while Resolution No. 75 allows, on an exceptional basis, the fishing and marketing of Badah fish in Abu Dhabi for the remainder of 2026. Authorities clarified that this is a temporary measure, subject to regular review based on scientific data and monitoring of fish stocks.

Officials explained that the decisions follow improved indicators in fish stock levels, supported by field studies, and aim to support fishermen while increasing local market supply. The Agency stressed that permitting Badah fishing does not represent a permanent policy change, but a seasonal exception to be reassessed.

The EAD urged fishermen and stakeholders to comply with regulations, emphasising that cooperation is essential to maintain sustainable practices. Previous measures included a similar temporary allowance for Badah fishing in 2021, reflecting its importance as a commercial species.

The Agency confirmed that policies will continue to be updated based on scientific findings, ensuring long‑term sustainability and protection of marine resources, while supporting economic activity.
