Lexis+ AITM is redefining legal research in Canada with citation-linked, Gen AI-powered responses grounded in trusted LexisNexis content. Using proprietary RAG technology, expert oversight, and rigorous safeguards, it delivers accurate, verifiable results that support legal professionals’ judgment.
When LexisNexis® launched Lexis+ AI in July 2024, it caught the attention of legal professionals across the country — particularly with its promise of generative AI-powered legal research featuring authoritative, linked legal citations. Designed with the Canadian legal market in mind, Lexis+ AI is built on one of the largest repositories of trusted, exclusive legal content available through LexisNexis, aiming to reshape how legal work is done.
By leveraging the advanced capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs), Lexis+ AI delivers high-quality, citation-supported responses. With the right techniques in place, LLMs are capable of reasoning and delivering authoritative results, minimizing the likelihood of hallucinations that are common in less specialized tools. One such method is Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG).
RAG strengthens generative AI output by grounding it in authoritative information. LexisNexis has developed a proprietary RAG framework that allows Lexis+ AI to respond using trusted legal sources, including Canadian case law, legislation, legal commentary, and Practical Guidance content — ensuring responses are both relevant and verifiable.
This architecture allows Lexis+ AI to avoid the pitfalls of generic AI models, providing information that reflects current Canadian law and referencing legitimate sources. The result is a system that returns well-grounded legal responses with links to real, authoritative content you can trust.
Each prompt is processed through five core quality checkpoints to ensure accuracy:
Lexical and semantic matching identifies the most relevant content based on the language and meaning of your query;
Recency filtering highlights the most current legal materials available;
Intelligent ranking elevates the most authoritative sources using indicators like those from QuickCITE®;
Authority filtering ensures the inclusion of significant courts and cases;
Citation verification confirms that every cited case is legitimate and directly linked, delivering authoritative and reliable results.
While no AI tool can promise perfection, Lexis+ AI offers a clear and consistent advantage: every linked citation in your results is pulled from a trusted source. In the rare case a citation appears without a link, users are encouraged to verify it, just as they would with any legal tool. Lexis+ AI is meant to support the legal judgment of practitioners, not replace it.
We are actively investing in our technology solutions and continuously strengthening the safeguards designed to deliver the highest quality legal answers. A key priority is enhancing the performance of our AI-powered tools, especially our innovative Lexis+ AI platform.
Importantly, human expertise is built into every stage of Lexis+ AI’s development and delivery.
Our generative AI product roadmap reflects a clear commitment to accountability, with human oversight embedded throughout. We engage Canadian legal subject matter experts to review and assess output quality on an ongoing basis, and we encourage users to rate results and provide feedback. This dialogue helps us refine and evolve our solutions to meet real-world legal needs.
These practices are fundamental to ensuring the responsible and secure use of generative AI. We are proud to act as a trusted partner to the Canadian legal community.
When we developed Lexis+ AI, our aim was to deliver legal responses grounded in the most authoritative content from LexisNexis. Our technical framework — paired with one of Canada’s most comprehensive collection of exclusive legal sources — makes this possible. This is how we fulfil our promise to deliver linked legal citations that are fully grounded in source content.
