Reputation and risk are read over years, not days, so the third test is how far back the record reaches. A source base limited to recent reporting can describe a company as it presents today and say nothing about how it arrived there.

Archival research lets an analyst trace how a company, sector or individual has actually been reported across a decade or more. A current-only view misses the pattern, and the pattern is usually where the risk lives: a recurring dispute that resurfaces under new management, a prior corporate name quietly retired after an adverse period, a matter settled without admission and absent from any present-day summary.

Depth also disciplines interpretation. A single recent allegation reads very differently once it is placed against ten years of prior reporting on the same entity, which may show either an isolated event or a repeating one. Without the archive, that judgement cannot be made, and the analyst is left describing a moment rather than a trajectory.

Test Four: Provenance and the Defensible Conclusion

The fourth test applies when a conclusion is challenged, which is the only moment that finally tests an intelligence function. A board, a regulator or a counterparty asks what the conclusion rested on. The defensible answer names the publication, the date and the original text, and can produce them. The indefensible answer gestures at a search result that has since changed.

Provenance is what makes a conclusion stand up. It is the documented chain from a stated finding back to the specific, attributable source that supports it. Acting on misinformation carries a reputational price in any context and, in regulated contexts, a regulatory one, because a decision that cannot be evidenced is treated as a decision that was not properly made.
