LexisNexis South Africa Celebrates a Year of Excellence in Innovation

In 2024, we witnessed the introduction of landmark legislation, the rapid evolution of regulatory and compliance frameworks, and groundbreaking thought leadership shaping responses to these transformative changes.

A brief overview of our regulatory landscape saw continued efforts to South Africa’s addition to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF)’s grey list in 2023 spotlighting the role of legal and compliance professionals in ensuring stringent monitoring and implementation of AML and anti-terrorist financing measures. Artificial intelligence continues to dominate industry conversations as regulators scramble to keep up with its rapid evolution. While a comprehensive regulatory framework governing the use of AI is still pending, the publication of the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT)’s controversial AI Planning Discussion Document is a step in the right direction.

In light of these topical and transformative items, LexisNexis has made it its mission to produce thought-leading content that aligns with our customers’ focus areas. This commitment is why we have hosted a series of webinars, showcasing our thought leadership in the industry. Our webinars provided a space for professionals to grapple with these concepts, ask questions, and connect with their peers. The webinars also provided an opportunity for attendees to explore our vast array of offerings, including Lexis® Practical Guidance, Lexis® KYC, Lexis® GRC, and Lexis® RefCheck —essential tools to navigate a rapidly shifting legal and regulatory space.

We added to this growing list of offerings with the launch of Lexis+ South Africa in March 2024, heralding a new era of innovation for LexisNexis South Africa. Lexis+ South Africa is a powerful AI-driven legal research platform that blends advanced machine learning with trusted legal content. Designed to tackle the increasing complexities of legal research, it provides users with precise, relevant results at speed, which is crucial in today’s fast-paced legal landscape. But Lexis+ South Africa is so much more, our game-changing platform is set to enhance productivity, precision and accuracy. We’re proud to be at the forefront of revolutionary legal and compliance technology and remain committed to empowering legal professionals with transformative solutions.

This year, our contributions to risk and compliance were recognised through numerous accolades. As leaders in the tech space, we were proud to be named finalists in the Africa Tech Week Awards in the categories of technology company of the year and innovation of the year. Another significant achievement was LexisNexis South Africa’s recognition as one of South Africa’s Top 500 Best Managed Companies, ranking among the Top Five in our business sector and earning official accreditation.

Our accolades extended beyond tech excellence as we were awarded the Digital Transformation of the Year Award at the 2024 Oliver Top Empowerment Award, also placing second for Diversity and Inclusion. These achievements reflected our leadership in leveraging advanced technologies like AI and big data to transform the legal sector and empowerment in the workplace.

We also received the Top Employer Certification for the second consecutive year, reflecting our commitment to exceptional employee conditions and a positive work culture. This accolade followed a rigorous assessment by the Top Employers Institute and recognised our dedication to diversity, innovation, and employee empowerment.

LexisNexis South Africa’s ROL initiatives this year showcase a deep commitment to empowering communities and advancing legal accessibility. Through a partnership with the Black Conveyancers Association, LexisNexis offers financial incentives on key tools like LexisConvey, discounted Practical Guidance resources, and collaborative eLearning opportunities. Globally, nearly 150 legal textbooks are being donated to institutions in Zimbabwe, fostering legal education. Locally, a new online platform aims to provide women with free, practical legal guidance, bridging access to justice.

Our belief in the crucial role of transformative, foundational education inspired our support of the Warwick in Africa program— an initiative that enhances education quality and supports teachers and students in English, Mathematics, Robotics, and Coding—aligning with South Africa’s strategic goals and the need for access to quality education without discrimination.

We also continued our support of the SAC-IAWJ Mentorship Program, after awarding a grant of $18,500 in 2023. This initiative, supported by the LexisNexis Rule of Law Foundation, emphasises our commitment to advancing mentorship, championing education, and empowering the next generation of legal professionals. Our BBBEE status further underscores our promise to recruit and retain top talent to build an inclusive and growth-oriented workplace— a promise that we continue to uphold as we drive societal impact through our next-generation solutions.

A highlight on our calendar was this year’s Cares Day—an annual event dedicated to community service and volunteering, where teams from our offices around the world participate in various charitable activities and initiatives. As LexisNexis South Africa actively supports the fight against gender-based violence and human trafficking, this year we partnered with the TEARS foundation.

TEARS works to address and prevent sexual violence and abuse; support survivors of rape, sexual assault, and domestic violence; and conduct educational programs to raise awareness and promote prevention strategies. They also play an essential role in upholding the rule of law by providing counselling, legal assistance, and advocacy efforts to ensure survivors can navigate the legal system and seek justice. We live in a country with one of the highest rates of gender-based violence in the world, emphasising the importance of this partnership and initiatives like Cares Day in fostering a more inclusive and accessible legal system and making a tangible contribution to a more just and equal society.

These achievements and milestones would not have been possible without the visionary leadership of our new CEO, Ian Andrews. With over 20 years of finance experience, including the past eight at LexisNexis, Andrews has proven his leadership as interim head of the South Africa business, driving sustainable performance with a customer-focused approach. A commercially minded leader with a passion for data-driven decisions, his expertise and dedication make him an excellent fit for this position.

To end this exceptional year, we thank our team for their dedication to excellence through innovation and our clients for their support and trust. We eagerly anticipate the challenges, milestones, and successes of 2025.
