MA’s New Healthcare Investment Law & ACA Coverage of Weight Loss Drugs in ND
New MA Law Increases Oversight of Private Equity Investment in Healthcare
Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey (D) signed a bill (HB 5159) expanding oversight of private equity investment in the healthcare sector. The law is the first in the nation to ban “sale leaseback” agreements, through which hospitals sell their real estate to an investment trust and then lease it back from the REIT. Other states including Indiana, Illinois and New York have also approved legislation aimed at increasing transparency in healthcare acquisitions. (PLURIBUS NEWS).
ND Becomes 1st State to Cover Weight Loss Drugs Under ACA
North Dakota has become the first state to offer coverage for glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and gastric inhibitory polypeptide weight loss drugs in individual plans provided under the Affordable Care Act. The expansion of coverage is part of the state’s first update to its essential health benefit benchmark plan since the ACA was implemented in 2015. North Dakota Insurance Commissioner Jon Godfread (R) said other states were expected to add weight loss drug coverage to their ACA-backed plans too. (FORUM [FARGO-MOORHEAD))
