LexisNexis Inmate Law Library Tip of the Month: Document Navigation Tools

LexisNexis Inmate Law Library Tip of the Month

The LexisNexis Inmate Law Library Tip of the Month is a practical series for correctional facility administrators who are committed to improving legal access and research outcomes in their facilities.

Each month, we will spotlight a feature, tool or best practice that helps your team get more value out of the LexisNexis platform—while making the experience more efficient for the incarcerated individuals you support.

Whether your focus is compliance, education, reentry preparation or simply ensuring uninterrupted access to legal materials, this series is designed with you in mind.

This Month’s Tip: Document Navigation Tools

One of the most common frustrations for legal researchers—especially in a correctional setting—is inefficient document navigation. Scrolling through lengthy case law or statutes is not just time-consuming; it can lead to missed information and user confusion.

The LexisNexis Inmate Law Library includes several built-in tools that make jumping to the right section fast and intuitive. When research sessions are limited, every click counts.

Step-by-Step Document Navigation Features:

1-Go To Dropdown

  • At the top of each document, there is a “Go to” dropdown menu that lists all of parts of the case, statute, regulation, etc.
  • Select the part of the document you want to jump to - No scrolling required.

2-Footnote and Headnote Arrows

  • When reading a headnote in a case, jump to where it came from in the opinion. Use blue arrows to take you there in a click.

3-Search Box

  • Use the Search box to locate specific terms in your document (similar to using CTRL+F).

4-Page Navigation

  • Enter your page number in the box to jump to the pincite (exact page of the case) where your issue is referenced.
