LexisNexis changing face, pace of online legal research with introduction of new “single search” functionality on lexis.com
New functionality provides legal professionals with results from across multiple sources, all in one place, for faster and more accurate research September 25, 2007 — New York, NY, September 25, 2007 - LexisNexis, a leading provider of information and services solutions, today announced the launch of an innovative new search functionality on lexis.com® called “Search by Topic or Headnote” that enables legal professionals to perform a single search across multiple sources to efficiently receive faster, better and more relevant results through one unified process. Building upon its leadership in the area of online legal research, the new search platform enables users to search by topic across content sources as diverse as exclusive Matthew Bender® titles, such as Collier on Bankruptcy®, Moore’s Federal Practice®, Chisum on Patents, Larson on Employment Discrimination and Appleman on Insurance, as well as leading state-specific Matthew Bender content. Primary source material, including cases, codes and administrative materials, as well as law review articles, restatements, legal news and practice forms are also included within the single search.
“When using online research tools, legal professionals want to be assured that they are covering all the bases,” said Allan McLaughlin, senior vice president of Research Solutions for LexisNexis. “This new search functionality helps ensure lexis.com users get the most complete information, with customizable searches covering multiple jurisdictions and a full array of primary and secondary legal materials, so they are confident they have the best information from the most relevant sources.”
The streamlined method for searching has been accomplished by having teams of experts map content from diverse LexisNexis sources to a multitude of possible search terms. The result is that when legal professionals choose a topic, they quickly receive the most relevant specific results from multiple collections – eliminating a laundry list of superfluous “hits” and the need to conduct repetitious source-by-source searching.
Single Search Means Time Saved
According to a 2007 ABA Legal Technology Survey Report, lawyers say they spend, on average, 18 percent of their work time on various types of legal research. The new search functionality via lexis.com eliminates the need to conduct individual searches of each jurisdiction and content type typically involved with a search on a specific topic or headnote.
This enables legal professionals to save time by launching a single search query that covers all relevant sources in one centralized location.
“As we seek ways to provide the most innovative, easy-to-use and comprehensive research tools for legal professionals, enhancing the speed and accuracy with which users can obtain results is always top-of-mind,” said McLaughlin. “Our decision to adopt this new search platform to lexis.com is part of our commitment to provide law firm customers with Total Practice Solutions for improving their business and enhancing client service.
