LexisNexis organizes one-day IP conference on April 18 at Shangri-La’s Far Eastern Plaza Hotel in Taipei

April 17, 2008 — Taipei, Taiwan, April 17, 2008 - LexisNexis®, a leading global provider of business information solutions, today announced it is making available several Intellectual Property (IP) protection solutions in Taiwan to help local manufacturers and companies protect their valuable IP assets when doing business internationally.

LexisNexis introduces TotalPatentTM, PatentOptimizerTM, Global IP Law Service, IP content from lexis.com®, and Matthew Bender® print titles in Taiwan, the first launch in Asian market. LexisNexis currently offers Courtlink® to provide court proceedings and tracking solution in Taiwan.

Coinciding with the launch of these IP protection products in the Taiwan market, LexisNexis is organizing a one-day IP conference commencing at 2:00 pm on Friday April 18, 2008 at the Shangri-La’s Far Eastern Plaza Hotel in Taipei. The event will feature discussions and case studies highlighting the strategic importance of IP protection for companies in Taiwan. Interested parties can contact Taiwan Online Plus, Inc. for registration.

Based on the number of international patents applied for and granted annually, Taiwan is one of the most important markets in Asia for IP creation.

“As a recognized center of innovation, particularly in several high-technology areas and manufacturing, IP protection is of paramount importance in an increasingly competitive business environment,” said Peter Vanderheyden, vice president Global Intellectual Property for LexisNexis. “Our suite of solutions can help Taiwan companies enhance their global competitiveness, both by protecting valuable IP assets as well as increasing the revenue opportunities.”

Increasingly acknowledged as the “currency of the future” by companies worldwide, IP can represent a significant investment and a critical component of a company’s success. Studies estimate that intangible assets now account for more than two-thirds of the value of the market capitalization of the S&P 5001, while the global patent-related market is growing at 8 percent annually driven by importance of IP and globalization2.

Patent applications over the past five years have grown at an average growth rate of 5.76 percent in the US3. Simultaneously, patent infringement claims received by companies have increased.  Consequently, organizations are facing not only the rising cost of litigation, but also the possibility of patent invalidation.

Protecting IP is a strategic necessity, but it involves considerable time and resources with the continuous changes in the industry, patent filing laws and rules, and global competition and pressures.

The LexisNexis suite of solutions addresses precisely these challenges to help companies that own IP save time and money, while reducing risk and frustration. From automating tasks around constructing and deconstructing a patent to searching 22 full-text patent sources from around the world, these solutions help customers properly obtain and protect IP assets with innovative technology, integrated with the way companies work, and designed to help them make better business decisions.
