Researchers and scholars can search Congressional Records from the 18th century via LexisNexis® Congressional Digital Collection through partnership with Purdue University

January 9, 2008 — New York, NY, January 9, 2008 - LexisNexis, a leading global provider of information and services solutions, today announced the expansion of the LexisNexis® Congressional Digital Collection, the most comprehensive online collection of congressional information available. With the addition of the LexisNexis® Congressional Record Permanent Digital Collection, researchers now have access to over 200 years of Congressional proceedings and debates, information not freely available anywhere else, all in a single search. LexisNexis will showcase the new Congressional Record Collection at the American Library Association (ALA) Mid-winter meeting in Philadelphia, PA, from January 11 to January 14, 2008.

This new collection will be accessible through the LexisNexis® Congressional interface and will be an addition to the LexisNexis® Congressional Digital Collection. LexisNexis users whose institutions have access to other LexisNexis®Congressional Digital Collection content such as hearings, congressional prints, CRS reports, and the Serial Set, will be able to retrieve combined results from the Congressional Record and all the other sources with a single search. New functionality includes the ability to link from the Congressional Record to cited legislative reports, hearings, and bill texts. Never before has there been such a simple way to access such a wide variety of congressional content and comprehensive results on the topic of interest.

The four titles included in this new collection, the Congressional Record (1873-to date), the Annals of Congress (1789-1824), the Register of Debates (1824-1837), and the Congressional Globe (1833-1873), cover all the concerns of the day, providing researchers with access to unique primary sources in U.S. history, public policy, business and economics, politics, international relations, sociology and the law.

Through an alliance with Purdue University, LexisNexis is able to access bound index volumes of the Congressional Record to build a more comprehensive collection that researchers, students and librarians will all find valuable.

“We are excited to once again bring greater access and ease of use to congressional content for our users. By converting print and microfiche collections into an online format, we are able to provide fast and easy access to historical records that can be searched along side our other important historical collections,” said Tim Fusco, vice president for LexisNexis® Academic & Library Solutions. “This is another example of how we are implementing our Total Solutions strategy to deliver comprehensive information solutions to our customers.”

"We're committed to providing and improving quality access to such significant content as the Congressional Record. Whether it be for researchers working on long-term projects, someone tracking legislative matters related to their community and family, or citizens seeking more general information on the business of Congress, our alliance with LexisNexis provides users with advanced search capabilities so they can find accurate and comprehensive government information quickly," said Marianne Ryan, associate dean for learning at Purdue University Libraries.

The collection is scheduled to be completed in 2009. In addition to opening up new avenues of research to those whose interests lie in history, economics and business, politics, international relations, sociology, and law, this rich content will also be of interest to law firms, government employees, government relations firms, the media, and political analysts doing legislative research. Stop by booth #1316 at the ALA Mid-Winter meeting to see a demo of the product.
