What

On November 9th, Merck & Co. Inc. announced that they would pay $4.85 billion to settle product liability claims related to usage of VIOXX, its arthritis and acute pain medication that was removed from the market in 2004. These funds will be used to resolve VIOXX-related claims involving plaintiffs who suffered a heart attack or a stroke and represents the largest pharmaceutical settlement in history.

Just one month following the announcement of this settlement, the lawyers who negotiated on behalf of the plaintiffs will gather at a conference in New Orleans to discuss the terms of the agreement and how attorneys with clients who are eligible for settlement payments can participate. Presented by Mealey’s Conferences as part the LexisNexis® commitment to provide a Total Practice Solutions approach to the legal community, the conference is open to registered attendees only. Subjects to be discussed include:

• The National Settlement: An Overview
• Getting Into the Settlement - The Injury
• Liability and Risk Factor Adjustments
• Preparing A Settlement Package
• View From the Bench
• Role of the Special Master
• Payments Under the Settlement
• Attorney Fees, Litigation Costs and Expenses
