Quickly compare laws across states with the new State Law Comparison Tool

How do wage deduction requirements and prohibitions compare in New York and Illinois? What types of personally identifiable information trigger data-breach notification requirements in Florida, Massachusetts and Ohio? Now understanding state law distinctions can be faster than ever before. There’s no longer a need to research each state individually. The State Law Comparison Tool in Lexis Practice Advisor® allows attorneys to efficiently compare laws across multiple states for a variety of practice areas and topics.

Expanding list of practice areas and topics

Lexis Practice Advisor is known for providing legal know-how and practical guidance to meet a variety of legal workflow needs. • Data Breach Notification Obligations
  • Leave Law
  • Restrictive Covenants
  • Screening and Hiring

A Discrimination, Harassment and Retaliation topic will release in the labor and employment State Law Comparison Tool in early September 2018.

Sample scenarios

Here are just a few of the scenarios where the State Law Comparison Tool can be especially useful:

Screening and Hiring. Can your client or company ask about a job applicant’s criminal history on its employment applications in California and Massachusetts? And if there is such a prohibition (i.e., a ban-the-box law), what are the requirements? You can choose this question: “Does the Jurisdiction Have Ban-the-Box Requirements?”

Trade Secret Protection. Compare the trade secret misappropriation standards that courts apply in New York and New Jersey. You can choose this question: “Does the Jurisdiction Have Laws or Authority that Address the Elements to Demonstrate a Trade Secret Misappropriation Claim?”

Data Breach Notification Obligation. A Fortune 500® company suffered a data breach that exposed the personal information of customers residing in Colorado, Delaware and New York. You can choose this question: “Does the state’s statute specify what the notice of a security breach must contain?”
