LexisNexis Practical Guidance has launched a dedicated AI & Technology Practice Area, a single destination consolidating and expanding all AI and technology-related practitioner resources into one location.

Practitioner-focused organization

The new AI & Technology Practice Area is organized around the tasks and matter types that are encountered in practice, rather than around abstract doctrinal categories. This task-based architecture allows practitioners to begin with the nature of the work (e.g., drafting an agreement, assessing regulatory exposure, advising on governance, etc.) and navigate directly to relevant resources, without first determining which traditional practice area might contain them.

Comprehensive coverage across the AI lifecycle

Content coverage spans the full lifecycle of AI and technology development, deployment and use. The Vault is a great place to aggregate multiple documents to use as a dataset for queries, create timelines or summaries, or search across vast amounts of information that you have curated in a safe and secure space. Vaults are accessible under the Documents tab in Protégé.

Recently, the file size for document uploads has increased to 100MB per file. This means that lengthy litigation records, transcripts, or large exhibits are now easier to add and then search or summarize.

Legal News Use Case and Prompt Tip for Protégé General AI

A common request for researchers is to get information on a particular company or even a specific issue that might show up in the news.

Prompting Protégé General AI and allowing it to search both the Web and LexisNexis legal content, can provide an up-to-date summary and highlights as an excellent starting point.

For example, here’s a recent prompt run the day after Netflix backed out of the potential purchase of Warner Bros./Discovery:

What are the reasons Netflix has backed out of the competition with Paramount for the purchase of Warner Bros./Discovery? Discuss the offers from both Netflix and Paramount.

Once the result comes back – with links to online sources on the Web – one might ask:

Based on the above, create a Boolean search for use with the News and Legal News content on Lexis+

The result typically includes more than one suggested Boolean search, depending on the variety of issues involved.

The Boolean search prompt request yielded several alternative search strings, covering the following topics:

Primary Boolean query
A search for “Financial/Valuation Coverage”
A search for “Deal Structure and Terms”
A search for “Strategic/Business Analysis”
A search for “Legal/Regulatory Focus”

The results also included additional search tips and an expanded search for broader coverage.

Use Case and Prompt Tip for Protégé General AI

Does your firm have a process for conducting reference interviews with attorney-requestors regarding vague or incomplete research requests?

If not – and you’re unfamiliar with doing so – you can use Protégé General AI to help. Here’s a prompt that works well. It’s generic, so think about adding additional information like the practice area or purpose of the information (marketing, client development, litigation, etc.)

For this prompt, I used Best Fit to allow Protégé to select the appropriate LLM.

Here’s the prompt and the response that came back, a very good guide to research interviews.

New Docket Number Retrieval Improvements on CourtLink

CourtLink has recently implemented algorithm enhancements designed to improve docket retrieval success and reduce the frustration that results when entering incorrectly formatted or misaligned docket numbers.

In the past users had to enter docket numbers exactly as they appeared in the court system, including all required hyphens, letters, numbers, and prefixes. Even minor typing mistakes would have potentially triggered an error message—“Enter docket numbers exactly as they appear in the source court system”—and return no results. This frequently made docket retrieval challenging when formatting details were incomplete or not quite right.

To help legal researchers find dockets more easily, CourtLink has adjusted its algorithms and updated the docket number search feature using data science–driven guidelines. The system can now recognize when a docket number is incorrectly or incompletely formatted and automatically suggests relevant alternatives.

This CourtLink docket search enhancement includes:

Flexible docket number searching: Minor variations—such as leading zeros, missing punctuation, or altered characters—no longer hinder the search process.

Best Practices for Creating a Docket Alert for a Keyword Search

Sometimes, you want to set up an alert in Courtlink for a specific word or phrase. However, alerts in dockets cannot be created based solely on a keyword search. But there is a workaround!

If you run a keyword search that you’d like to save as an alert, you can add “Litigation Area” criteria to the search, even if that means selecting all available options.

By including this additional information, you’ll then be able to create an alert that captures keywords from your search results or directly from the CourtLink home page.

Saving Jurisdiction Filters from Search to Search and from Session to Session on Lexis+® and Lexis+ AI®

On Lexis+ and Lexis+ AI, you can pre-select and save multiple jurisdiction filters directly from the homepage, ensuring that they are automatically applied to all your search queries. This feature not only saves valuable time when repeatedly searching within the same jurisdictions but also allows you to refine your results further using the post-search filters panel.

Following are the steps to save jurisdiction filters:

From the Word Wheel expand on jurisdictions then select and then save selected jurisdictions:
- Choose preferred jurisdictions
- Click Add to saved jurisdictions

In the Search Bar, your selected and saved jurisdictions will be visible, and they will carry over from search to search.

The saved jurisdictions will also appear in filters panel on the left when displaying search results and will carry over to other content areas.

To refine results:
- Use the left filter pane to add or remove jurisdictions, by selecting or deselecting them:

Note: Additional post-search jurisdictional filters will not persist across sessions unless they are set through the initial saved jurisdictions process. New filters applied from results panel are only temporary and will apply solely to the current search and current content area.

To remove saved jurisdictions > click Clear saved jurisdictions

By pre-selecting and saving jurisdiction filters on Lexis+ and Lexis+ AI, you streamline your search process and ensure consistent, refined results every time. This feature saves you valuable time by automatically applying your preferred jurisdictions to all searches, while still allowing flexibility with temporary post-search adjustments.

Litigation Analytics Party Footprint

It is now much easier to get a robust picture of a company’s or an individual’s litigation footprint, and the analysis that accompanies that footprint.

Previously, when searching on a party name, if there were multiple versions of that name, you would have to open each footprint separately to get the whole picture.

For example, if I was interested in Starbucks, searching for the party name Starbucks brings back results that show name variations:

And while the first one is the largest grouping, I would also look at the footprints for the additional ones below it, because they are not included in that first result. Why? The name variation creates these multiple, unique entries.

Now you can use the Litigation Party Footprint option, and get a more complete picture in one footprint. Searching for Starbucks here, I have the option to select up to 100 results from the list:

And now the footprint reflects the data from all those results, and I can edit the list and remove any that I don’t need in the analysis:

I find this to be more efficient and comprehensive!

Give it a try the next time you have a party name that usually has name variations, this will save you having to download and combine multiple footprints.
