LexisNexis is a global provider of legal information services and tools, which provides us with an important perspective on how the law is serving communities worldwide. We have made it our mission as a company to advance the Rule of Law around the world so that all citizens and institutions are treated the same according to their prevailing laws.

One way that we carry out this mission is by putting our money where our mouths are and allocating corporate financial resources to support the efforts of legal practitioners who are working for fundamental changes that promote equal justice under the law. LexisNexis Legal & Professional’s participation at two major industry events this Fall included the presentation of a series of awards to lawyers who are doing amazing work around the world.

International Bar Association “Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year Award”

We were privileged and honored to partner with the IBA to recognize two individuals for their commitment to advancing the Rule of Law.

The first individual was Raphael Pangalangan, a lawyer from the Republic of the Philippines, who was the recipient of the 2023 IBA Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year Award. This award was created by LexisNexis in partnership with the IBA in 2008.

Pangalangan is a special counsel at Ocampo & Suralvo, where he advises governments, corporations and international organizations on economic sanctions, trade protectionism, white collar crime, and business and human rights.

Through his work with CenterLaw Philippines, he has represented victims of the Philippine drug war before domestic courts, foreign sanctions regimes and international bodies. He has played a key role in several landmark cases for his country, including challenging the constitutionality of the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020 before the Philippines Supreme Court and in representing victims of red-tagging, a practice used to target and intimidate human rights defenders, journalists and political opponents. He also served as legal counsel to members of the Malaya Lolas organization, a group of women who survived the “comfort system” of sexual exploitation instituted by Japanese occupying forces in World War II.

“My life is dedicated to using law as an instrument for change — to stand up for the marginalized, to voice the voiceless and to improve the lives of those around me,” said Pangalangan.

In addition to his legal advocacy work, Pangalangan has taken on several advisory roles with the United Nations, served as a visiting scholar at Harvard University, and teaches courses on human rights and international law at Jindal Global Law School, work that is advancing the rule of law worldwide. Learn more about Pangalangan's award presentation.

International Bar Association “Pro Bono Award”

The second individual we were honored to help recognize at the IBA Annual Meeting was María Fernanda Mierez, a lawyer from Argentina, who was the recipient of the IBA Pro Bono Award for 2023. This is an annual award presented by the IBA Pro Bono Committee that we are pleased to support with a financial sponsorship.

Mierez is a partner at Beccar Varela, where she co-heads the firm’s ESG and Company Law departments, focusing on business law and M&A advisory work.

Mierez was recognized for her 20-year dedication to pro bono legal work, including the co-founding of a pro bono program within her law firm and the establishment of structures such as the Young Lawyers Pro Bono Network in Argentina. Under her leadership, Beccar Varela received numerous awards for its pro bono initiatives, including the Enrique Shaw Award for “business with a human face” and Latin Lawyer’s regional Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year in 2022. Her efforts have also made an important contribution to encourage a new generation of practitioners to get involved with legal aid.

“Pro bono work connects us with our career purpose, it is the responsibility of every lawyer to facilitate people’s access to their individual rights, especially the most vulnerable,” said Mierez. “Through two decades of pro bono work, I have come to know the organizations we assist and the positive impact they have on individuals, contributing to a fairer and more beautiful society.”

Having an accessible legal remedy is an essential element of the rule of law, so providing this kind of pro bono legal assistance to the most vulnerable is key to ensuring access to justice. See more about Mierez's award presentation.

Union Internationale des Avocats “LexisNexis Rule of Law Award”

The Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA), a global association of lawyers that brings together 2 million lawyers from 110 countries, hosted its 67th Annual Congress in Rome in October.

We were pleased to recognize Céline Bardet, a lawyer in France, as the recipient of the 2023 UIA/LexisNexis Rule of Law Award. We established this award in partnership with the UIA in 2016.

Bardet is the president and founder of We Are Not Weapons of War, an NGO dedicated to fighting sexual violence in conflicts by proposing a new way of working on the ground with victims. She is also an internationally renowned expert on justice and security issues who works regularly as a consultant on projects funded by the European Commission and the United Nations. She is particularly focused on complex criminal issues such as war crimes, corruption, terrorism, drug trafficking and organized crime, post-conflict justice and sexual violence in conflicts. Ms. Bardet is also an associate judge at the Cour Nationale du Droit d’Asile, the national court of asylum in Paris.

“We sincerely hope that this award will help draw international attention to the valuable work undertaken by Ms. Bardet, and inspire other members of the legal community to support her and follow her example by engaging in this type of civil society-led initiative in their own countries,” said UIA Immediate Past President, Urquiola De Palacio,.

Ms. Bardet’s ongoing commitment to the fight for justice and her tireless efforts to combat sexual violence in conflict zones is a heroic example of the fight to advance the rule of law worldwide. See more from Bardet's award presentation.

While our LexisNexis colleagues strive to give back all year round, September is a particularly active time where teams across the organization go out and do good works. Here’s a look at a few events that took place this month across LexisNexis offices…

A Walk to Remember

In Toronto, Jay Brecher’s team participated in a charity walk with the Terry Fox Foundation, raising more than $2,000 to fight against cancer. Terry Fox was a Canadian athlete who, having lost his leg in 1977 and in 1981, using a prosthetic leg, ran 3,339 miles across Canada to raise money to fight cancer. In the years since, the foundation named after him has raised more than $750 million for this cause.

Brecher’s team took part in a 5K walk, which he said was shortened to 3K due to the sweltering weather. They had a water station set up at the end of the route to ensure everyone’s safety, but everyone still had a great time and was proud to have raised more than $2,000.

There Will Be Blood

Although he didn’t participate as part of a team, Alex Millar of our LexisNexis UK business chose to give a literal part of himself up for a good cause. Millar donated blood to the National Health Service at the Leeds City Blood Donor Centre!

Everything went well, he said, and “It’s an excellent opportunity to help people in need.”

Eat Pray Love

A popular way to give back for LexisNexis teams is to work with food banks and other organizations that help feed the hungry. This month, several LexisNexis teams participated in events to help sort and package food for those in need.

In Dayton, Ohio, Gina McGuire’s team helped the Dayton Food Bank stuff bags of food for children. In all, she said, her team of seven helped put together more than 500 bags of food that will help feed hungry children in the Dayton area. These bags, she said, are distributed every Friday to people in the area.

“It was a lot of work but very fulfilling,” McGuire said.

Similarly, a Dayton team led by Glenn Zeiser helped package meals to be distributed to senior citizens. Zeiser said they packed enough meals to fill six pallets, about 150 boxes of food.

“It truly is rewarding to volunteer and make a difference in people's lives,” Zeiser said, “and it's wonderful that the LN Cares program allows us time to do it!”

In Raleigh, Archana Rao’s LexisNexis InterAction team helped sort and bag a whopping 18,512 lbs of potatoes and sweet potatoes to help feed families in need. North Carolina is a national leader in producing sweet potatoes, Rao said, and some of the ones they sorted “were the size of footballs.”

Rao’s team worked with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, which Rao said distributes some 15 million pounds of food in the area every year.

“Food insecurity is a growing problem in the world and in the USA. 213,890 people in the 10 counties around us are facing hunger,” she said. “We are happy to use the hours LexisNexis provides each employee to help the food bank help our neighbors in need.”

Also in Raleigh, Suresh Babu Athota and 14 others helped the food bank sort apples!

“The team was energetic and went above and beyond during the event,” Athota said, ultimately bagging some 11,920 apples for the community.

And last but not least, Stefan Kowalewski and a team of 13 others took part in an event with the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle Farm. Kowalewski said the farm aims to teach community members to grow healthy foods and explore creative solutions to ending hunger.

At the farm, Kowalewski and his team helped plant and harvest vegetables that will be distributed to local food pantries, schools, and senior citizens, as well as sold at the farm’s own farm stand.

Everyone “felt good about being able to plant and harvest crops, knowing their efforts benefit the local community,” he said.

Across the Universe

Across LexisNexis, other teams held book drives, educational events, and more. It’s just part of our efforts, big and small, to shape a more just world. To learn more about opportunities available to LexisNexis employees, check out our Careers page!

For LexisNexis Canada, Caring is Year-Round

When kindness and charity are needed, LexisNexis employees are there to help. For many years, the LexisNexis Cares program has partnered with charities around the United States and beyond to give back in our communities.

For World Kindness Day, we thought it appropriate to highlight one of the teams that has consistently delivered good works through fun and creative activities for employees to engage in. Based in Toronto, LexisNexis Canada offers lawyers powerful tools and analytical insights specifically for Canadian law. But the employees there don’t stop at innovating ways to help lawyers succeed, they’re also innovating ways to give back to their community there and abroad.

For example, over the last few years, the Canada team has held virtual Name That Tune events. Originally growing out of an employee talent show, Name That Tune has morphed into an event that benefits local charities as employees donated about $1,000 in 2021 and is on track to beat $1,500 for 2022.

In these virtual events, employees with musical talents play a portion of a song and others try to guess the song and artist.

Jay Brecher, director of analytical content, says the event is the result of participation between the Cares program and the team’s social committee. “LexisNexis’ Got Talent was an event that happened five years in a row,” Brecher said, “and we thought, maybe we can turn this into a fun fundraising event.”

Brecher also says the events have expanded to include LexisNexis colleagues from the United States. The team also organized a 30-day meditation challenge benefiting Amnesty International that drew in support from LexisNexis teams all across the globe.

And just this past week, LexisNexis Canada team members joined with Global Medic for a food sorting event at Global Medic’s Cloverdale packing location. The team helped weigh, seal and pack more than 1,140 packages of rice and lentils that Global Medic will distribute to Toronto-area food banks.

“In three hours, we boxed 1,148 bags, whereas our shift supervisor was us to do closer to 1,000,” Brecher said. “We exemplified core values such as a passion for winning and valuing our people.”

Coming up in the future, the team will hear from a special guest speaker Daniel Chapman-Smith, co-founder and executive director of Project Humanity, which works to expose youth in Toronto’s shelter system to the arts.

How does the team select which charities to partner with? Brecher says for him it started during his time with the Ontario Bar, when he formed a number of relationships with local charities that he continues to support today. But now the team has been so successful that other team members come to him with their own ideas for charities they want to support.

That’s how LexisNexis Canada gives back with its participation in Cares. But when it comes to the why, Brecher says it best: “For me, it’s something that I’m really passionate about. It’s something that makes me proud to work for LexisNexis and be part of RELX that they support our interest in supporting the community and supporting amazing charitable organizations that need help. It’s really something that energies and motivates me and it’s not just with the volunteer hours but with corporate matching funds. Every dollar that can be matched by the company will be, to the extent that I can. I think it’s fun, it promotes camaraderie, so it’s great for team building.”

“And,” he adds, “it just feels good to know that you’re helping others.”

Depp v Heard and the Rule of Law

By Ian McDougall

As regular readers of this blog will be aware (thank you to both of you!) I try to take a major story of the day and give it a Rule of Law angle. The reason for this approach is that the Rule of Law underpins our prosperity and peace. Without strong adherence to the rule of law, our society breaks down. Security is lost, freedoms are lost, peace is lost. Yet very often the Rule of Law can sound very academic; obscure principles that do not seem, at first glance, to matter to our everyday lives. That is the point of this blog; to show why it matters in everyday life and to show how that everyday life would be immeasurably worse off in the absence of the Rule of Law.

But first, let me take you back to 1692, in Salem, Massachusetts, USA. More than two hundred people were accused of witchcraft. Thirty were found guilty, nineteen of whom were executed by hanging (fourteen women and five men). One other man, Giles Corey, was pressed to death for refusing to plead (!), and at least five people died in jail.

Arrests were made in numerous towns beyond Salem and Salem Village. It was the deadliest witch hunt in the history of colonial North America. It is a vivid cautionary tale about the dangers of religious extremism, but more importantly for our current purposes, false accusations, and lapses in due process.

Layered on top of this was prejudice (the belief that Women were more vulnerable to the devil than men!), maneuverings in politics and church as well as accusations that family feuds played a part. The seeds were sown for an attitude of irrationality and injustice to take hold. There was no defense counsel, no process, no evidence. In fact, even a 4 year old child was questioned.

Accusation followed accusation and many were compelled to implicate others as the only way of saving themselves. The evidence against the accursed? Only that they had seen “spirits” cavorting with the accused. Innocent people were hanged without a single shred of supporting evidence. Or, as the judge in the Depp/Heard trial called it, a “scintilla” of evidence that ought to be required to prove a claim.

So, let’s remind ourselves, with that history lesson in mind, about the importance of the 4 elements of the Rule of Law and how they were perverted in the Salem Case to lead us to disaster:

Equality before the law. We can see a number of issues here. Firstly, the obvious discrimination against women (the “susceptible” argument). Clear and obvious nonsense that was believed without any supporting evidence.

Independent Judiciary. In this case we had a judiciary inclined to believe fantastical nonsense without question. In addition, there seemed to be a presumption of guilt on the basis of allegation alone.

Access to the law. There was really no law at all in this case. Being a witch had no definition and was grounded in superstitious fear, prejudice and ignorance.

Access to remedy. Clearly, the lack of proper process, the lack of defending counsel, the total lack of any requirement for proper verifiable evidence denied the poor victims any opportunity to remedy.

The result was catastrophe. Innocent people were killed and there was an almost total breakdown of civil society from which it took years to recover. So now let me put you into the position of one of the victims. There is literally no evidence against you. The claim that you have been cavorting with the Devil is errant nonsense, and yet there you are, in the dock with no opportunity to defend yourself with these claims being believed. As a result, you are to be hung. Are you feeling good about that situation?

Now to modern times. For many years terrible abuse was not taken seriously. It was not properly investigated and predators escaped because either the victims were not believed or because the perpetrators were too powerful to be brought to justice. Women who are, more often than men but not exclusively, victims of sexual, violent or other abuse have finally seen society start to recognise that there is a problem. Finally, there appears the growing recognition that their experiences need to be taken seriously. In recent times, there has been (rightfully) a movement which has sought to raise the issue of abuse of various kinds that needed to be redressed. The horrific stories of abuse were at last believed and ultimately prosecuted. Powerful people who had escaped justice, like Harvey Weinstein, were finally held to account. For many years, women (in particular) have been in the position of the Salem accused; nobody taking them seriously, nobody listening and justice denied. The journey to correct this has only started with things like the “Me Too” movement.

But, like all movements, reactions, corrections, we have to be careful not to go too far in the other direction. Correcting one injustice by creating another is not a solution that accords with the Rule of Law. I recently saw a hashtag called “Believe Women”. That sounds like a sensible hashtag within the context of the “Me Too” movement, but within it lies a danger. Namely that someone should be believed (or not) simply because of an attribute rather than because they have a legitimate claim, supporting evidence and a right that needs protecting. The idea that a person should be believed simply because they have a particular attribute is as perverse as not-believing someone for the same reason. Irrationality and the absence of the rule of law leads to injustice.

This leads me to the sensational Depp/Heard trial for defamation and the accompanying claims of abuse by both parties against the other. I have watched much of the trial. Along with it has come social media commentary with hashtags such as “Team Heard” or “Team Depp”. Some people claim that we should believe Heard/Depp (take your choice) because of “Me Too” or because ”men can be victims too” (take your choice). These are both bandwagons that need no proof, no due process, no rule of law. As I said, to believe someone because of an attribute about them rather than evidence leads to injustice. Then positions are adopted (by both sides) from the same perspective as the Salem accusers; because I accuse you must be guilty. It is fundamentally flawed.

The innocent, victims, need protecting but it is only through the rule of law that we can hope to achieve this. Throwing slogans around which seem to obviate the need for evidence simply leads to injustice. Believing one person’s evidence over another because of who they are is perverse. I should not support Amber Heard just because she is a woman as much as I should not support Johnny Depp because he is a famous movie star. So instead of taking extreme positions, I ask that everyone remember that the position we ought to take is one that is tried and tested as a working principle for stable justice systems; view the evidence and decide each case on the merits of the arguments and the law. Do not support one side or another simply because they have an attribute that you happen to support. Salem is not a model for the rule of law and we must always be careful to avoid that slippery slope. I’m not on “Team Depp” or “Team Heard”. I’m on “Team Rule of Law”.

One example of people thinking and acting creatively to help those around the world is efforts by Bill Kessler, LexisNexis North America & UK Sales Engineer, and Dave DiCicco, Senior Director of Product Management, to help the community in Lower Johnsonville, Liberia through ground-breaking technology for a village which lacks infrastructure. They helped make technology more accessible through a Bridge Pi, a device that consist of commonly available hardware items to enable access to data using solar power!

The project started with a problem. The children in Lower Johnsonville, Liberia are testing as illiterate. In fact, more than 80% of them cannot read. And if they cannot read now, they have little hope of every reading as an adult—and thus reading the law or accessing justice. And so, LNROLF worked with a Liberian charity, Agents of Positive Change, to make a real difference in children’s lives. A shipping container filled with books and supplies was sent and Bill and David figured out a solution for the books that did not fit into the container.

Below is the story of how this project came to be from Bill and David:

Bill Kessler (top) and Dave DiCicco (bottom) and building the Bridge Pi devices.

Q: Can you explain exactly what is a Bridge Pi?

A: A Bridge Pi (sometimes called a “Raspberry Pi” which is used as a “bridge”) is a WiFi hotspot which can be built through relatively inexpensive parts. The Raspberry Pi is a low cost, credit-card sized computer. The resulting device is about the size of a fishing tackle box. It is portable, and it can be carried to the location where it can be useful to the largest group of people. The device also does not require electrical power to operate. The Bridge Pi has a solar power charging component. It allows the Bridge Pi to be used in a rural location, such as Lower Johnsonville, Liberia, where the village lacks electricity. The WiFi will allow laptops or mobile phones to access a hosted server. The system allows people of all ages to get to educational or legal materials.

Using low-cost commonly available hardware (solar panel, battery pack, and Raspberry Pi computer), and when coupled with high-quality curated content, this solution allows access to library with resources to enable patrons in Liberia to improve and learn new skills in the digital age and progress more successfully in their education.

Q: Did you work with others to establish this Bridge Pi, and will you be working with this same group or others on similar devices in the future?

A: We worked with a non-profit group called U.S.-Africa Children’s Fellowship (USACF), as they have put together a dedicated hosted server to house over 1,000 books for early-learning literacy. The server was a logical place for the WiFi to link. The village will be able to access the information on the hosted server. While in this instance, Liberian citizens would access literacy materials. We are excited that this instance is just a beginning. Just recently, the work we can do on Bridge Pi has been included in a U.S. government grant to assist in bolstering the human rights of people in rural parts of Malaysia. In this project, the Bridge Pi device will be deployed in rural Sabah to link to servers developed by LNSEA which house laws, policies, and guidelines on establishing State IDs and birth registry.

Q: Why did you get involved in volunteering on this project?

A: (Dave) I have always been interested in computers and technology. Whether it was pestering my mom to let me take a summer class on programming when I was 9 or building my own Raspberry Pi system at 49. I was excited to take my lifelong interest in computers to give back and provide a solution to people who could truly benefit from this simple, but transformational technology. Building a Bridge Pi was a fun and enjoyable way to help others. We are the ones who are the “go to” people within our families and our communities on technology. Giving this same technological skill to others is a passion—and it is also interesting and fun for us!

Q: Do you have any suggestions on how others can get involved?

A: (Bill) I volunteered last year to work on the ABCs of the Rule of Law Coloring Book for the children in Liberia. When you (Terry Jennings) brought the Bridge Pi issue to Dave DiCicco as a project that needed to be done, Dave mentioned it to me. I jumped at the chance to help. Being able to assist others in an area where the poverty level was so low was important to me. I love the famous quote by John F. Kennedy: “Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.” I grew up in a family of educators who lived in a way that emphasized the importance of giving back to others. An opportunity to do more for the children of Liberia, use my own talents, and build towards our LexisNexis mission to advance the rule of law checked all of my personal boxes.

At LexisNexis, Customer Success Is Key

Employees are logging their move minutes online, competing with teams from offices in Raleigh, New York City, Dayton and beyond. We’re extremely proud of the effort our colleagues have put into this challenge and to achieve our goal of raising $100,000 for the American Heart Association.

So far, 230 LexisNexis employees across six sites have logged more than 520,000 minutes of movement in June and July! Each participant is logging an average of 107 minutes per day. And we’ve currently raised $32,020!

And how did we do just in July?

The person with the most minutes each month wins a $75 gift card. In July, our winner was Adam Millay, a telephonic solutions consultant in our Dayton office. We asked Adam a few questions about the challenge:

Are you walking to honor a friend or family member?

Heart disease runs in my family, so I am staying active so I am doing it for family members and to avoid any hereditary impacts.

Where do you like to walk or run?

I prefer somewhere outdoors, but I have been running on a treadmill and utilizing my home gym.

What motivates you to keep going?

Once you have established a routine, it just become natural. I typically have three sessions of exercise a day – morning, lunch, and evening.

Do you have a song that gets you pumped?

Not particularly, my musical tastes change with my overall mood so it really depends on the day.

What message would you like to give to your colleagues to motivate them?

Walking, running, or exercise does more than just improve your health – it improves your mental state and overall mood.

#LNBPMs

Lots of people like to listen to music while running or walking. A song with a BPM (beats per minute) between 120 and 150 help set a great pace for being active. What’s your running jam? Here’s one we like, Ozzy Osbourne’s 1980 smash hit, “Crazy Train.” Watch it on YouTube: https://youtu.be/tMDFv5m18Pw
