Anything But Artificial: 3 Ways LexisNexis is Advancing the Rule of Law Around the World with Legal AI

By Sean Fitzpatrick | CEO, LexisNexis North America, UK & Ireland

We are witnessing a profound transformation in the legal industry—one driven by the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence. At LexisNexis, we believe this technology has the power to unlock justice, elevate legal practice, and improve lives in ways we couldn’t have imagined just a few years ago.

At LexisNexis, our mission is to advance the rule of law by providing widespread access to legal information and tools. We make legal knowledge more readily available to people and institutions worldwide because we believe this drives social change that improves lives. Why is this so central to our company’s work?

Consider the fact that there are roughly 8 billion people living on our planet today. According to the World Justice Project, approximately two-thirds of that global population have unmet justice needs, such as:

  • 5 billion people can’t resolve civil, criminal or administrative justice issues;
  • 5 billion people are excluded from opportunities provided by the law; and
  • 253 million people live in extreme conditions of injustice.

How Do We Advance the Rule of Law?

            The United Nations defines the Rule of Law as a governance principle where everyone, including the State, is accountable to publicly known laws that are equally enforced, adjudicated and aligned with international human rights standards.

There are three key criteria guiding this principle: (1) All are equal under the law; (2) There is transparency of law; and (3) Timely access to legal remedy or resolution in a court of law. The stronger each of these components are, the stronger the rule of law.

LexisNexis is committed to advancing the rule of law by making legal information widely accessible and actively engaging in initiatives that promote a fair and just legal system. Here are three specific ways that our efforts in developing legal AI tools are supporting this mission:

  1. Powering Access Through Rich Legal Content

Our content repository is a comprehensive and expansive collection of legal information, including federal and state case law, statutes, editorial analysis and more, that is designed to support legal professionals in their research and decision-making processes. This collection of more than 100 billion documents and records that span over 200 years is then enriched through editorial and metadata enhancements that ensure the content is both reliable and easy to easy to search, understand, and trust. We update this system constantly, adding over 2 million new documents and records to the collection every day. This advances the rule of law by providing access to the law and supporting legal materials, helping lawyers make informed decisions and providing effective representation to their clients.

  1. Enabling Insights with AI-Driven Tools

The LexisNexis technology journey has evolved from providing traditional legal research tools to leveraging advanced AI-powered solutions that deliver real-time, data-driven insights. Our AI solutions, including our new personalized AI Assistant, Protégé in Lexis+ AI, are developed with human oversight and are designed to support legal professionals in their work, no matter where they are in the world. This industry-leading technology platform is a key enabler in our mission to advance the rule of law because it ensures that lawyers can access relevant, up-to-date legal information, improving transparency, accountability and the removal of bias within legal systems worldwide.

  1. Expanding Reach, Elevating Global Justice

We operate in numerous countries around the globe and make legal information accessible to a wide range of users across different jurisdictions. Moreover, through the LexisNexis Rule of Law Foundation and our partnership with The International Bar Association, we support initiatives that promote access to justice, legal education and research on rule of law issues in underserved communities. Our global reach is a fundamental aspect of our mission, enabling us to work around the clock each day to promote legal reform and improve access to justice.

The Mission Continues

As we look to the future, LexisNexis remains committed to staying at the forefront of technological innovation, continuously adapting and evolving to meet the ever-changing needs of our customers, always in support of our mission to advance the rule of law around the world.
