LexisNexis® is proud to be leading the next wave of AI innovation in the legal industry with LexisNexis Protégé™, a personalized AI assistant that intelligently powers productivity, drives next-level work quality, and enables legal and business professionals to unlock new economic value. Leveraging proprietary agentic and generative AI technology, Protégé™ can autonomously complete complex legal workflows based on user goals, including reviewing its own work and identifying areas where it can improve its own output.
This week, at the 2025 Microsoft Build conference in Seattle, we unveiled a powerful new way for legal teams to enhance productivity and streamline workflows—Protégé for Microsoft 365 Copilot and for Microsoft Teams.
Protégé is a private, trusted legal AI Assistant that places the user in control and delivers uniquely personalized work product in a private, secure setting. Personalization choices are controlled by the user or their organization to optimize the individual AI experience.
What sets Protégé apart is its ability to integrate both our comprehensive and authoritative legal content and our customers’ own documents and past work product securely stored in a Document Management System (DMS). Within Protégé, these resources are then combined with advanced agentic and generative AI capabilities in our global technology platform, personalized to the legal professional’s workflow and their jurisdiction, making it a very powerful legal AI assistant that can walk the user through their entire workflow and anticipate what they’ll want to do.
Our new collaboration agent experience in Microsoft 365 Copilot and Teams provides a seamless experience for legal professionals to use Protégé within the familiar Microsoft 365 environment, where many of them already conduct their work.
Teams users simply add Protégé as an agent in meeting, just as they would invite a trusted colleague to join the discussion, and Protégé becomes another “voice” in the meeting to provide additional real-time collaboration. The difference is that Protégé is grounded in individual participants’ preferences, the legal documents and relevant work product in their DMS, and all of the authoritative LexisNexis content that can inform the legal discussion.
The integration of Protégé with Microsoft 365 Copilot and Teams is currently in preview and offers several key benefits for legal professionals:
For example, Protégé in Teams can help legal professionals work faster and smarter through the following use cases:
Protégé can provide real-time AI support alongside live discussions during meetings, regardless of the number of professionals on the call spread across various time zones and regions. This capability is especially useful during a meeting to review the terms of a contract under negotiation, where Protégé can be called upon to quickly summarize key clauses and flag important deal points that need to be contemplated by the legal team members on the call.
Protégé can assist in group chats by reviewing proposed language in various legal documents and flagging risky language that should be carefully considered, then provide recommendations for revisions. The tool can also compare different versions of possible clauses in contracts or other documents and highlight key differences so that legal professionals can use their judgment to determine how they wish to proceed in a way that best mitigates risk to their organizations.
Protégé is a valuable AI assistant for synthesizing information and escalating key action items during meetings. The tool can analyze a contract or other legal document under discussion, highlight clauses that lack a liability cap or other critical elements, and provide insights and recommendations to the meeting participants so they do not end the meeting until all key action items are determined.
Protégé can help legal team members to prepare effectively for meetings by summarizing documents that are relevant to the conversation and providing suggested discussion points, including contextual insights informed by previous interactions and work product. Then after the meeting has concluded, Protégé can continue to provide support in group chats, ensuring that the context and insights from the meeting are preserved, and generate action item reports to help teams stay on track with their tasks.
In addition to the new integration with Microsoft 365 Copilot and Teams, Protégé is available now within Lexis® Create+ for full-document legal drafting in Microsoft Word, the Lexis+ AI® legal workflow solution, and the Lex Machina® Legal Analytics® platform. Protégé will be seamlessly integrated across the LexisNexis ecosystem and Microsoft products, expertly assisting legal and business professionals wherever they work.
