Virginia, a leading data center market, released a long-delayed report examining the industry’s possible impact on the groundwater supply in the state’s eastern region. The report by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, which was due in January and released after an open records request by the Associated Press, found that declines in a critical aquifer are likely due to population growth and industrial use and urged the Legislature to strengthen regulators’ authority to deny permits; require large water users to consider alternative water sources; improve local water-use planning; and increase funding for water management.
