AI adoption is accelerating, but tax firms risk falling behind. Without clear success metrics, talent will leave, and competitive advantage will be lost.

A new Tolley survey of UK tax practitioners reveals a strong uptake of interest in generative AI, with more on the way.

The use cases for tax AI are endless, and right now we're only at base camp.

AI is already transforming tax practices – but are firms keeping up?

Adoption is rising, but implementation is lagging. As AI reshapes the tax profession, firms that move fast will gain an undeniable competitive advantage, while those that hesitate risk losing both clients and talent. Our survey of 350+ UK tax practitioners found:

  • Almost half rated their organisation as slow or very slow at adopting technology.
  • Almost two-thirds (60%) said more AI training would encourage greater use.
  • 42% aren’t using any significant metrics to measure AI performance.
