LexisNexis Announces Ground-Breaking Conference to Discuss Economic Development and the Rule of Law in Latin America

September 05, 2007

Government, business and judicial leaders throughout Latin America and the United States gather to discuss reform and progress

September 5, 2007 — New York, NY, September 5, 2007 - LexisNexis, in its continuing efforts to expand the impact of the Rule of Law globally, announces the first ever Latin American conference focused on economic development and the Rule of Law in Latin America to be held in Mexico City on September 13 and 14. This two day meeting brings together experts from government, business and the judiciary to discuss the Rule of Law as a critical component of economic development in the region.

Conference hosts include the National Law Center for Inter-American Free Trade; the Inter-American Bar Association, Centro de Mediación y Arbitraje; the International Centre for Dispute Resolution; Consorcio Justicia; Ilustre Nacional Colegio de Abogados; the American Bar Association’s Rule of Law Initiative; the Hispanic National Bar Association; and the Cuban American Bar Association.

Speakers and participants include Chief Justice Guillermo I. Ortíz Mayagoitia of Mexico’s Supreme Court, leading a panel of Supreme Court Justices from Latin America including Alfonso Cháves Ramírez, vice president of Costa Rica’s Supreme Court, and Supreme Court Justices from Honduras and Peru in a discussion of the judicial system and Rule of Law reform in Latin America.

Also scheduled to address this audience are Honorable Jorge Luis Battle Ibáñez, former president of Uruguay, Alejandro Toledo former President of Peru and Dr. Emilio Cárdenas, Argentina’s former UN ambassador. Senior executives from the World Bank, DHL, Procter & Gamble Latin America, the Motion Picture Association of America, and others are scheduled to offer their economic development expertise.

Respect for the rule of law is the foundation for creating conditions that foster business development, so we are pleased to convene with distinguished Latin American thought leaders and leading professionals to create an open dialogue,” said Henry Horbaczewski, senior vice president and general counsel of Reed Elsevier Inc., LexisNexis’ parent company. “We look forward to exploring solutions that can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.”

"The rule of law, as a system of governance in which nationals and foreigners are equally protected against arbitrary and illegal actions regardless of who is the perpetrator, is in today's globalized world a pre-requisite for bountiful international trade and investment. To be effective, however, the protection of the rule of law must not only be found in written laws, but also in the fair and effective application of these laws by judicial, administrative and private sector interpreters,” Boris Kozolchyk, executive director and founder of National Law Center for Inter-American Free Trade.
