  • provides access to exclusive legal sources unavailable on many other AI platforms
  • can incorporate organisation documents and prior work, when enabled
  • operates within a secure, enterprise-grade legal workspace
  • does not use customer data to train models for other users
  • supports user-controlled personalisation by role, jurisdiction, and practice area
The result is AI-assisted legal work that is more authoritative, secure, and relevant to the way legal professionals work.

You can trust Protégé because it is built using authoritative legal content and developed with human expertise throughout the process. LexisNexis combines the work of technologists, data scientists, and subject matter experts to develop, fine-tune, and validate its AI solutions. Protégé is designed to deliver grounded responses linked to authoritative content, with citations and references where available.

Vault allows you to securely store and organise documents in a dedicated workspace for AI-powered legal tasks. Protégé can use documents in a Vault to support tasks such as generating timelines, identifying citations, analysing arguments, and drafting legal content. It can also suggest relevant tasks based on the documents you upload. You can create up to 50 Vaults, with 1 to 500 documents in each Vault. All data is securely stored and encrypted. Vaults are retained until you choose to delete them, and documents can be added or removed at any time. If you upload 11 or more documents, you will be prompted to create a Vault. Uploads of up to 10 documents outside a Vault are automatically deleted at the end of each session. Results generated from Vault activity are retained for 90 days in your My Conversations history.

Protégé is designed with robust privacy and security controls to help protect sensitive legal information and support compliance with relevant data protection requirements. You remain in control of your data and personalisation settings, including the ability to adjust settings or opt out where applicable. LexisNexis does not use customer data to train AI models for other users. Customer information is used only to support your work, with strict controls around access, retention, and use.

General AI refers to AI that is not specifically optimised for legal use cases. It is well suited to general-purpose tasks such as drafting communications, structuring information, and analysing text. Within Protégé, General AI is available in a secure, controlled environment, allowing legal professionals to explore broader topics, draft more flexibly, and support their work without leaving their legal workflow. Users can choose from multiple model configurations depending on their needs.

Protégé offers a range of AI models, including Legal AI, GPT-4o, OpenAI o3, GPT-5, and Claude Sonnet 4. Legal AI is optimised for legal tasks and grounds responses in LexisNexis content, including CaseBase citations.
  • GPT-4o is a fast, general-purpose model suited to drafting and broader tasks, with web search and citation-checking capabilities available.
  • OpenAI o3 is designed for complex reasoning and analysis, with access to web search and deep research tools.
  • GPT-5 supports advanced reasoning, strategic thinking, and complex problem-solving.
  • Claude Sonnet 4 is designed for speed and structured responses, making it useful for everyday drafting and communication tasks. General AI responses are not grounded in LexisNexis content, but all model configurations operate within Protégé’s security and privacy controls.

Protégé includes both Legal AI and General AI capabilities, and users can switch between them within the platform. Legal AI data, including documents, prompts, and conversations, is hosted in Australia to support local data requirements. General AI is not currently hosted in Australia because it uses multiple large language models that are not locally hosted. However, the same strict security and privacy controls apply to both environments.

Protégé combines three types of AI to support legal work:

  • Extractive AI retrieves specific information from legal sources to support precise research and targeted summaries.
  • Generative AI creates new content to support drafting, summarisation, and conversational research.
  • Agentic AI enables multi-step processes to support guided workflows, automation, and proactive suggestions.
