Charlene Wee
Senior Associate
Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer Prolegis Alliance
Charlene Wee is a disputes lawyer with experience at all levels of the Singapore courts including the Singapore International Commercial Court, and with a focus on complex cross-border litigation and arbitration. She strives to provide targeted, commercially attuned solutions for clients navigating high-stakes disputes.
Charlene has particular expertise in the fast-evolving digital assets sector – leveraging on deep industry knowledge gained from her secondment experience at one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges – and in the fields of arbitration-related and private equity disputes. The secondment experience has sharpened her ability to align legal strategy with commercial imperatives and to translate procedural complexity into clear, implementable steps for multidisciplinary business units.
The work that Charlene has done reflects both scope and outcome. Charlene recently led a contested hearing and successfully resisted the setting aside of service out of jurisdiction in respect of examination orders for various directors and officers of a Philippine conglomerate. The matter engaged novel legal issues and aspects of foreign law, underscoring her command of complex cross-border litigation. Charlene also plays a key role in Asia-wide enforcement proceedings brought by a state-owned energy company against the said Philippine conglomerate.
Charlene also has experience acting in restructuring and moratorium proceedings, in the face of proceedings commenced by creditors and threats of winding up from creditors, for various companies including listed companies and one of Southeast Asia's then-leading cryptocurrency exchanges, Zipmex.
The cross-jurisdictional work done by Charlene currently spans arbitrations seated in Hong Kong with global connections, enforcement of arbitral awards in Singapore in respect of entities based in the Philippines, setting aside of arbitral awards in Singapore in respect of entities based in India, and recognition of foreign insolvency proceedings in Singapore.
Her impact is quantifiable within the firm. Charlene has become an internal point of contact for cryptocurrency disputes and advisory issues—regularly consulted by colleagues and highlighted to clients seeking specialised expertise. She manages cross-functional and cross-office collaboration under tight timelines through calm, clear and encouraging guidance.
Charlene’s growth mindset is practical. She is an active participant in the mentorship programme for the recipients of the Singapore Academy of Law Undergraduate Scholarship and emphasises commercial awareness and sustainable practice alongside technical excellence.
