John Kwok
Director, Legal
Canada Pension Plan Investment Board
John Kwok delivers strategic legal advice and support across APAC (ex-India) for Canada Pension Plan Investment Board ("CPP Investments"), spanning private equity, credit, infrastructure, real estate and public equities. Over the past year he led legal execution and investment compliance on transactions that included the landmark acquisition of AirTrunk by Blackstone and CPP Investments, divestments of four real-estate joint ventures in China, and several credit investments into new separately managed accounts with leading GPs.
At the enterprise level, he led initiatvies to streamline legal and financial structures across entities in Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong, while also supporting a range of global and regional enterprise projects. These efforts delivered measurable cost and time savings through entity simplifications and governance enhancements, reduciing filing requirements and management overhead, and accelerating capital recycling. He also co-developed a regional legal framework to codify preferred and fallback positions for minority investment transactions, and helped improve standardized NDA processes that enhance consistency and efficiency in deal execution.
A champion of responsible generative AI adoption in the region, he has demonstrated its practical application in resolving legal and compliance policy matters. His impactful contributions across both investment leggal and enterprise legal operations in APAC, paired with a strong commitment to culture, innovation and collaboration, earned him internal recognition of nomination to CPP Investments' CEO Excellence Award. Externally, he was named a finalist for the Asian Legal Business 2025 Young Lawyer of the Year (In-House). He also regularly mentors junior colleagues across both investment and non-investment teams, fostering talent and knowledge-sharing within the organization.
In leading several new APAC credit transactions, John successfully aligned commercial objectives with local legal requirements and the CPPIB Act by coordinating fund and regulatory counsel across time zones, crafting legally sound, commercially viable documentation and establishing a scalable framework for future credit strategies. He delivers legal trainings across Hong Kong, Sydney and Mumbai, organizes briefings with external advisors on sanctions, tariffs and U.S. compliance issues, and participates in AI-focused trainings while promoting internal knowledge-sharing. His cross-jurisdictional remit covers investment execution across Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia and China, and enterprise legal governance for regional subsidiaries. His recent thought-leadership contributions include reviews of Australia’s FIRB and ownership reporting regime, with colleagues and leadership testimonials emphasising his proactive partnership, risk identification and ability to elevate legal awareness across the business.
