Mao Shujie
Shanghai Xinyi Law Firm
Mao Shujie is a senior partner whose practice fuses intellectual property litigation with disciplined use of legal technology. In the patent infringement dispute over mobile phone baseband chips between ASR Microelectronics and Spreadtrum Communications, Mao represented ASR Microelectronics on appeal. Using an intellectual property case management system for large-scale retrieval of similar cases and visual comparisons of technical features, Mao distilled the core issues and created visual presentations of courtroom evidence that improved judicial comprehension. The second-instance court reversed the earlier verdict, avoiding economic losses of USD 3.5 million for the client; the trial was broadcast via the “Hotline 12” program and is described as a benchmark case for digital litigation strategies in technology-related intellectual property disputes.
In daily work, Mao applies Python, SPSS, and self-taught AI tools to conduct preliminary retrieval and analysis of patent literature and judicial precedents. A clear operating model governs their use: “AI preliminary screening + lawyer’s in-depth review.” This approach treats AI as an efficiency engine for processing massive information while reserving strategic judgment, legal-technical comparisons, and final conclusions for professional review—addressing AI’s limitations with specialized terminology and complex reasoning.
Workflow and compliance have been systematized around a digital case management platform. For patent litigation, Mao uses templates to automatically generate legal documents, tracks court deadlines visually, and accelerates evidence handling through OCR and keyword tagging. The tools have saved approximately 30% of administrative work-time, reduced the risk of procedural errors, and allowed greater focus on technical comparisons and litigation strategy.
Mao also advances access and inclusion through online channels. An online intellectual property consultation platform—with standardized questionnaires and automated analysis—supports SMEs and startups in low-cost patent risk assessments. As a mediator at a Shanghai mediation center, Mao provides services via online systems to reach parties outside the city, and compiles FAQs and legal guidelines for public dissemination through media platforms, including the official WeChat accounts of [Company Name], COS Cross Border, and the Shanghai Changning District Intellectual Property Association. As a digital transformation champion, Mao introduced the firmwide case management system and independently developed the WeChat Mini Program “TRO Temporary Restraining Order”(TRO 临时禁令)tracking all U.S. SAD (Seizure and Detention) cases, provided free to the public. Reported outcomes include a 30% improvement in document management efficiency and a 100% automated task deadline reminder rate, under ethical guidelines emphasizing data privacy, algorithmic transparency, and audited professional verification.
