Our Mission
At LexisNexis, we're working to bring the percentage of people living outside the umbrella protection of the rule of law down to zero through our day-to-day business operations, products and services, and actions as a corporate citizen.
In its simplest form, the rule of law means that "no one is above the law." It is the foundation for the development of peaceful, equitable and prosperous societies. For the rule of law to be effective, there must be equality under the law, transparency of law, an independent judiciary and access to legal remedy. Yet, about 57% of the world's population lives outside the shelter of the law. That's four billion people struggling for basic, human rights on a daily basis.

At LexisNexis, we're working to bring the percentage of people living outside the umbrella protection of the rule of law down to zero through our day-to-day business operations, products and services, and actions as a corporate citizen.

Our purpose is to advance the rule of law around the world. Publishing laws and enabling access to justice is at our core. Each time we document a case, release a decision tool or support the development of a legal infrastructure, we're working to expand the umbrella protection of the rule of law.

Work in the rule of law is in collaboration with customers in legal, corporate, government, accounting, tax and academic institutions in more than 175 countries, which rely on us to deliver improved outcomes by helping them make better decisions, achieve better results and be more productive.

Our people have implemented a program of support that enables local communities and developing nations to gain access to materials and guidelines, essential to the proper administration of justice and advancement of society.

On Wednesday 25 June, LexisNexis New Zealand was proud to partner with the New Zealand Law Society Te Kāhui Ture o Aotearoa for the launch of the Strengthening the Rule of Law in Aotearoa New Zealand report. The event featured insights from LexisNexis and a dynamic panel discussion with Professor Geoff McLay, Debra Angus, Tim Stephens KC, and Dr Unaisi Narawa. Together, we explored the current state of the rule of law in New Zealand, and what more we can do to safeguard its future.
While critical to upholding democracy, the rule of law has declined globally for the seventh consecutive year as of 2024. Aotearoa New Zealand has not been immune to this trend, with our own rankings falling and international challenges beginning to creep into our legal environment.
The Law Society’s new report—developed through engagement with members of the legal profession—identifies key challenges and offers practical recommendations to reinforce and protect the rule of law.
In a historic move, the Cook Islands has embarked on a significant project to consolidate its laws and make them publicly accessible online for the first time in 30 years.
The project is a huge step towards making the legal system transparent and accessible to everyone, from citizens and local lawyers to the wider global community, and was made possible with generous funding from the High Commission of Aotearoa New Zealand. It has been conducted in collaboration with global publisher LexisNexis, which contributed its technological and editorial expertise throughout the project.
As a result, the Laws of the Cook Islands website was launched on 24 June 2024 as a free, globally accessible resource providing access to Cook Islands legislation. David Greig, Deputy Solicitor-General of the Cook Islands says the resource will be a “game changer” for practitioners in the country, and will go a long way to demystifying the legal system for its citizens.
